Former Swedish National Champion will join Ole Miss in the fall

OXFORD, Miss. --  Ole Miss Men's Tennis has added its first Rebel for the 2020-2021 season in Swedish product John Hallquist Lithén, head coach Toby Hansson announced Tuesday afternoon.

Lithén, a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, has represented his country in the European Championships on two separate occasions, and claimed National Championships during both indoor and outdoor seasons in 2019. Lithén ranks first in the country in the U18 category.

Lithén was honored with the prestigious Sportsmanship Award, awarded by the National Swedish Tennis Federation.  This past summer, he earned a wild card spot for the Bastad ATP 250 Tour, facing the 190thranked player in the world, France's Constant Lestienne, and falling in a second-set tiebreak.

Lithén joined the ATP World Tour rankings this past August, and currently ranks No. 1315, with an ITF boasting of No. 1240 in singles.

"We are very excited to welcome John to the Ole Miss family," Hansson said. "He is an outstanding tennis player and an excellent student. After having an opportunity to watch John compete and after spending time with him it was clear that this young man does not take any shortcuts to achieve his goals. To me what stands out with John is his strong character, dedication to the game and work ethic. We are looking forward to working with John and giving him the best opportunity to realize his goals as a student athlete at Ole Miss and beyond."

Lithén is the first member of the 2024 class, but will be the second Rebel from Sweden on the squad, joining current rookie Nikola Slavic, who hails from Stockholm.
