Rebels Win Fourth Title of the Season, A New Program Record
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 12 Ole Miss women's golf team made history on the final day at the Moon Golf Invitational Tuesday, taking home the team title for the fourth win this season, a new program record for wins in a season.
The Rebels carded a 4-under 284 Tuesday to finish three strokes ahead of No. 50 Augusta to claim the title. Ole Miss went 289-285-284—858 over the two-day tournament to finish 6-under, which marks the six straight under par performance as a team this season.
The Rebels continued their success in dominating the par 5s, going 23-under for the tournament as a team. Ole Miss led the field in total pars with 176.
Ole Miss now joins Kent State as the only two teams in Division I to have four team titles this season.
"Today was a great day for our program," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We played solid golf from start to finish, and to top it off with a win is a great confidence booster for our team as we kick off the spring season."
Chiara Tamburlini led the Rebels on the leaderboard, tying for third for her second straight top-three finish dating back to last fall's runner-up finish at the Battle at the Beach. The freshman carded three straight rounds par or better for the second straight event. She went 5-under this week, going 70-72-69—211 and tied for the team lead in birdies with 12.
In Tuesday's final round, Tamburlini carded three straight birdies at No. 7,8 and 9 in the middle of going bogey-free for a 12-hole stretch. Carding two birdies in her final three holes, the St. Gallen, Switzerland, native sealed it for Ole Miss to take home the title.
Senior Kennedy Swann tied for 14th after a final round 1-over 73. Swann has finished inside the top-17 in every event this season. She went 73-71-73—217 for her fourth tournament at 1-over or better. Swann tied with Tamburlini for the team lead in birdies with 12 and was second in the field in par-5 scoring at 7-under.
Julia Johnson matched Swann on the leaderboard, tying for 14th. She went 73-70-74 for her sixth top-15 finish of the season. Johnson was second on the team in pars with 37 and played the par 5s at 3-under.
Andrea Lignell put together back-to-back even par rounds to finish in a tie for 21st. The freshman led the team in pars with 38 and went 2-over for the tournament (74-72-72—218).
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay had the second-lowest round of the day for the Rebels, carding a final round 2-under 70. The sophomore finished tied for 41st at 6-over (73-79-70—222).
The Rebels return to the course, March 14-15, for the Valspar Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Georgia.
