Ole Miss returns to Oxford for its SEC home opener Friday, March 13
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Things came down to the wire Sunday for No. 11 Ole Miss Men's Tennis, who was outlasted by No. 19 Tennessee Sunday at Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville.
The Rebels slip to 10-4 on the season and 1-2 in SEC play, while Tennessee improves to 13-2 and 2-1 in the league.
Ole Miss headed into singles play with the advantage, thanks to wins on Courts 1 and 3 in doubles. After a loss at second doubles, the 17th-ranked duo of senior Tim Sandkaulen and junior Finn Reynolds evened things with a 6-4 win, bringing the doubles point down to the pairing of junior Cotter Wilson and freshman Nikola Slavic, who picked up a 6-3 win.
Freshman Lukas Engelhardt carries some early momentum, taking the first two games in his opening set while the rest of the Rebs were all split at one game apiece. Slavic won back-to-back to take a 3-1 lead, while the rest of the squad continued to be knotted up, as things were again even on every other court, this time at two games each.
The Volunteers evened the contest and quickly took control with wins on Courts 1 and 2, but the match was evened with Slavic's victory on Court 4. He has posted a 7-2 clip in his last 10 contests and boasts 10 wins this spring.
His classmate tied things once more, as Engelhardt finished shortly after with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on Court 6.
The Volunteers took the lead and would not relinquish it for the remainder of the match, registering wins over sophomore Simon Junk and Reynolds, who each battled in opening set tiebreakers before ultimately falling.
