Three Rebels Tally Top 10 Finishes in Summer Tournaments

6/27/2020 | Women's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. – Three Ole Miss women's golfers registered top 10 finishes this week in summer tournaments around the country.

Kennedy Swann, who is returning for an extra year of eligibility in 2020-21 after the coronavirus pandemic shut down the 2020 season, fell in the quarterfinals of match play at the Oregon Amateur Championship and finished tied for fifth.

Swann qualified for match play after firing a 75 and 73 in the first two rounds of stroke play. In the round of 32, the Austin, Texas, native won her match 2&1. She followed that up with a 3&2 win below falling 1-down in the quarterfinals.

Swann earned second team All-SEC honors this last year after finishing no worse than a tie for 17th all season, including an individual win at the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah. She finished fourth in the conference in scoring (71.39), which was good for the second-lowest single-season stroke average in program history.

Rising senior Julia Johnson was also in action, finishing tied for sixth at the Golfweek Myrtle Beach Collegiate. Johnson used a bogey free, final round 69 to move up seven spots on the leaderboard to secure a top 10 finish.

Johnson finished 5-over for the week after rounds of 74 and 78 prior to her final round 3-under 69.  She finished tied with nine birdies in the three rounds, the second-most in the tournament.

Johnson earned All-American honors from both the Women's Golf Coaches Association and Golfweek following a record-breaking junior campaign. The St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native led the SEC with a 70.72 stroke average, the lowest single-season stroke average in program history, while finishing inside the top-15 in every event this season.

Johnson led the Rebels on the leaderboard in three of the six events played, finishing par-or-better in five. She was the individual medalist at the Battle at the Beach, the third win of her career, good for the second-most in program history. Her final round 11-under 61 tied an NCAA record for lowest individual round and went toward a program-record 54-hole score of 203 (73-68-61).

Incoming freshman McKinley Cunningham tied for seventh at the Tennessee Junior Amateur held June 23-25 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Cunningham finished 11-over for the tournament (76-71-80—227) to register a top 10 finish.

Cunningham tallied six birdies on the first day of competition, including four straight on the back nine to end her first round with a 4-over 76. The birdie streak continued for the Clarksville, Tennessee, native as she tallied five birdies in round 2 to shoot a 1-under 71. She was one of only four participants to shoot under par on the day.
Cunningham is the No. 2 ranked recruit out of the state of Tennessee in the 2020 class according to Junior Golf Scoreboard. Last summer, she led the Sneds Tour Elite Series points list with two wins in her home state.

She tied for sixth in the 2019 Tennessee Women's Amateur, highlighted by a second round 68, the second-lowest round in the field. Cunningham qualified for the U.S. Girls Junior in 2018 and the Tennessee Junior Cup in both 2018 and 2019. She won the Craig Rudolph Memorial Tournament in her hometown, and finished top-five at the Scott Stallings Junior Championship in June thanks to a final round 68.
