Rebels Return both Keepers from 2019 Season
OXFORD, Miss. โ In the first of a four-part series, OleMissSports.com takes a look at the Rebel soccer team's goalkeepers ahead of Saturday's season opener against Texas A&M.
ย
Junior Ashley Orkus returns in goal after starting all 20 matches and playing every second of the season between the posts just a year ago. In her first season playing in a Rebel kit, Orkus registered a 1.28 goals-against average with a .769 save percentage and recorded six shutouts in an impressive 2019 campaign.
ย
The Vestavia Hills, Alabama, native ranked second in the SEC with 86 saves last season and is one of the top returning goalkeepers in the conference. The junior keeper's numbers would have been even more impressive if not for nine penalties conceded by Ole Miss in 2019. Orkus had an excellent fall camp and heads into the 2020 season with big expectations.
ย
Behind Orkus, Ole Miss also welcomes back redshirt-freshman Lizah Pistorio. Pistorio didn't see any action in her first collegiate season after a standout prep career but recorded 83 saves in 14 games during her senior year at Providence Senior High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. During her time at PSHS, Pistorio was a two-time letterwinner and state champion.
ย
The Rebels kick off the 2020 season on Saturday, taking on Texas A&M at 5 p.m. CT at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The season-opening matchup will be featured on national TV, airing on the SEC Network.
