Texas A&M Scores Three Goals After the Break to Claim the Contest
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss and Texas A&M entered the halftime break locked in a scoreless tie during Saturday evening's season-opener at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium but a second half surge of three goals in just over 10 minutes pushed the Aggies to a 3-0 victory.
The Rebels (0-0-1, 0-0-1 SEC) got off to a fast start, with Madisyn Pezzino firing off the match's first shot within the first minute, with A&M's Shantel Hutton catching the effort. Ole Miss then came within inches of taking the lead in the 14th minute as Taylor Radecki's throw-in was met by a Molly Martin header in the box, beating Hutton but slatteriing off the right post.
A&M (1-0-0, 1-0-0 SEC) started to find its footing as the half rolled on and after a 1-on-1 shot from Addie McCain was wide in the 38th minute, Ashley Orkus came up with a big save a minute later on a Laney Carroll strike to keep the game deadlocked.
After the halftime intermission, the Aggies resumed their attack and broke through in the 50th minute as McCain was given too much space in the box and was able to slot past Orkus. McCain made it a brace in the 58th minute, delivering a chip-shot that Orkus was able to get a hand to but unable to keep from trickling into the net. Shortly thereafter, Carroll made it a third with a low shot into the corner.
The Rebels were denied by the frame of the goal for a second time in the 78th minute, with Lonnie Mulligan just unable to keep her right footed shot inside the far post from the right side of the box. The Rebs kept fighting but were unable to break through as the clock hit triple zeroes.
Ole Miss returns to action on Sunday, travelling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the first road matchup of the season for the Rebels. The match, scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT kick, will be aired on ESPNU.
