Devontae Shuler Records Fifth 20-Point Game of the Season
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Defense has been the trick in each win this season and it did so again on Tuesday night, as the Ole Miss Rebels pulled away in the second half and came away with a 64-46 road win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Humphrey Coliseum. The Rebels (7-6, 2-4 SEC) locked down behind a 2-3 zone, surrendering their fewest points in a conference game since 2004.
"Really good team win and a really important win, maybe the most important game on our schedule against our archrival," Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis said.
Devontae Shuler tacked on another outstanding individual performance in this rivalry series by scoring 22 points on 8 of 13 shooting. Jarkel Joiner added 12 points, eight of which came in the second half. Luis Rodriguez led the Rebels with eight rebounds to go along with his six points.
Defensively, Ole Miss forced the Bulldogs to shoot 35 percent (18 of 52) from the floor and forced 12 turnovers, 10 of those were steals with Shuler grabbing three of them. The Rebels out-rebounded MSU 37-31, while shooting 46 percent (26 of 57) on the night.
The first half verified what two of the SEC's top five scoring defenses could do. Just over four minutes into the game, the Bulldogs held a 7-3 lead after a pair of free throws, a three-pointer from D.J. Stewart and tough jump shot from Iverson Molinar. Shuler had Ole Miss' only points with a three-pointer of his own. Nearing the halfway point of the first half, both teams struggled to score with MSU shooting 30 percent (3-10) and Ole Miss shooting 27 percent (3-11).
The Rebels went on an 8-0 run, while four players from the bench made their way on the floor. Ole Miss had a 16-11 lead with 7:38 left in the first half. Both teams would continue to play outstanding defense for the remainder of the half. A last second jump shot from Joiner gave Ole Miss a 29-21 lead going into halftime.
Ole Miss shot 41 percent from the floor in the opening half (13 of 32) with Shuler scoring 12 points with a pair of three-pointers. KJ Buffen added five points, while Joiner and Dimencio Vaughn added four apiece. Almost a quarter of Ole Miss' scoring came from second chance buckets. Defensively, the Rebels forced MSU to shoot 36 percent (9 of 25) as well as having a 20-16 advantage on the glass.
Coming out of the locker room, Shuler added his third three pointer of the night on the half's first possession, giving Ole Miss an 11-point lead. However, the Bulldogs got right back in it with a 7-0 run. Both teams traded blows for the next six minutes and change, as Stewart answered multiple Ole Miss shots. With 11:33 remaining, the Rebels had a 44-38 lead.
With 8:05 left, Ole Miss had another 11-point lead thanks to a Matthew Murrell jump shot, forcing MSU to call a timeout down 52-41. Rodriguez's jumper at the shot clock continued an Ole Miss 10-0 run and gave the Rebels a 56-41 lead with 5:58 remaining in the game. Ole Miss cruised the rest of the way, securing the win against their in-state rival.
After the rivalry game, Ole Miss returns home to host Texas A&M (Jan. 23). Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on SEC Network. It will be the fifth Saturday in a row that the Rebels play in The Pavilion.
