Ole Miss Grabs a Season-High 23 Offensive Rebounds

ATHENS, Ga. – Despite a dominating night on the glass, the Ole Miss Rebels were victimized by outstanding shooting from the Georgia Bulldogs for the second time in two weeks, falling 71-61 at Stegeman Coliseum Saturday.

Ole Miss (8-8, 3-6 SEC) out-rebounded Georgia (10-6, 3-6 SEC) 40-30, with a 23-10 mark on the offensive glass, but shot 36 percent (23 of 64) from the floor. The Rebels forced 19 turnovers, their highest total in SEC play, but were unable to prevent Georgia from another hot scoring outing. The Bulldogs shot 55 percent (26 of 47) from the floor with nine three pointers (50 percent).

Offensively, Jarkel Joiner led the Rebels in scoring for the second time in three games with 14 points followed by 11 points from Devontae Shuler, both finishing 4 of 14. Robert Allen added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds, tying his season high.

In his first start of the season, Allen immediately went to work, scoring Ole Miss' first two baskets. After three lead changes, Ole Miss took an 8-7 lead due to a pair of Shuler  free throws heading into the media timeout. Both teams shot 60 percent during that span and forced two turnovers. Georgia continued to find open lanes to the basket, working against the Ole Miss 2-3 zone and making four straight buckets to take an 18-14 lead with 11 minutes and change left in the half.

The Bulldogs proceeded to force a near four-minute scoring drought in order to take a nine-point lead. A jump shot from Shuler ended the drought and cut the Georgia lead to 25-18 with 6:31 left in the first half. However, in a blink of an eye, Joiner scored five straight points to get the Rebels back within two a minute later. Both teams traded blows for the remainder of the half with the Bulldogs holding a 37-34 lead going into the locker room.

The Rebels shot 41 percent (13 of 32) from the floor, forced 11 turnovers defensively, and dominated the glass with a 19-11 overall advantage and 11-3 mark offensively. However, they were victimized by a blistering hot shooting start by Georgia. The Bulldogs shot 60 percent (15 of 25), including a 6 of 9 mark beyond the arc. Rodriguez led the Rebels with nine points on 3 of 6 shooting, including Ole Miss' lone three-pointer make with a team-leading four rebounds. Joiner wasn't too far behind with seven points and three boards.

Georgia maintained a similar distance to begin the second half despite Ole Miss continuing to take advantage of second chance points. Going into the first media timeout of the second half, the Bulldogs held a 44-40 lead. Georgia forced another long Ole Miss drought to go up by eight for most of the following four minutes of play. After a few back-and-forth possessions, the Bulldogs led 52-46 with 11:56 to go. Georgia then went into an offensive slide of their own before Joiner's transition layup cut the Rebel deficit to three with 10:22 remaining.

The Bulldogs again went back up a few possessions thanks to a 6-0 run that gave them a nine-point, 62-53 lead with 7:24 remaining. A three-pointer from PJ Horne opened up the first double-digit lead of the game in favor of Georgia. That allowed the Bulldogs to hang on the rest of the way, sealing the home win.

After a week on the road, Ole Miss returns home to face the nationally-ranked Tennessee Volunteers (Feb. 2). Tipoff from The Pavilion is slated for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
