Stackpole’s Early Goal Holds Up as Rebs Improve to 6-1-0 in SEC Play

OXFORD, Miss. – Haleigh Stackpole gave No. 18 Ole Miss the lead less than seven minutes in and the Rebels (11-2-2, 6-1-0 SEC) made the score hold up Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium, defeating Vanderbilt (6-7-2, 3-3-1 SEC) to make it four wins in a row.

Molly Martin shined in setting up the lone goal of the match, slipping a ball past her defender inside the 18-yard box and sliding a square ball across to Stackpole, who only needed to guide the ball into a vacant net to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team in the seventh minute.

With the lead in hand, the defense went to work. Despite being outshot 19-5 on the day, the Ole Miss goal was rarely threatened and on the few half chances for the Commodores, Rebel keeper Ashley Orkus stood tall.

Vanderbilt's best chance to draw level came in the 22nd minute. Aided by a Rebel turnover inside the 18-yard box, Peyton Cutshall's shot was close but clattered off the right post.

Stackpole nearly returned the favor to Martin in the 30th minute, finding the fifth-year senior all alone off a corner delivery at the far post. However, Martin's header went high and Ole Miss settled for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Just under 15 minutes into the second 45, Stackpole found Channing Foster with a through ball. Foster had a brief opening but the Commodores closed quickly, blocking the attempt to keep the score at 1-0.

Vanderbilt put the ball in the back of the net in the 68th minute but the flag came up for offside and the Rebels were able to close things out from there, securing three more points to make their total 18 in the SEC table.

QUICK KICKS

• During its four-match winning streak, Ole Miss has surrendered just one goal.
• Ole Miss has won seven of its last eight matches and seven of its last eight conference matches as well.
• Sunday's win was Ole Miss' third-straight against Vanderbilt. Haleigh Stackpole scored the game-winner in two of those three wins.
