Suber Climbs to Third Heading into Final Round of Blessings Collegiate

10/5/2021 | Men's Golf

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Behind a 7-under 65 from senior Jackson Suber, the Ole Miss men's golf team closed out the second day of competition at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Tuesday. The team fired a score of 282 (-6) on the day, good enough for the Rebels to sit in third on the team leaderboard just two strokes behind leader Arkansas heading into the final day of competition (285-282–567). The Rebels were able to slice into the Razorbacks' lead after trailing by seven shots following the opening round.

"I was really impressed with our guys' composure during the middle of our round," head coach Chris Malloy said. "They held it together and limited the damage when we faced some serious adversity. That is the sign of a very good team. I can't wait to get out there and see how we do tomorrow."

Suber saw a massive climb up the individual leaderboard as his round of 65 included a total of nine birdies. Now holding a two-day score of 138 (-6), Suber finds himself in a tie for third place individually with just one day remaining on the course. Suber racked up birdies on seven of his final 12 holes on the day, climbing 19 spots on the leaderboard from the start of his day to the end. With 12 birdies through 36 holes, Suber has the second most in the 52-man field.

"Jackson's round was very impressive today," Malloy said. "Nine birdies is impressive anytime, but especially out here."

Maintaining his solid play from day one at the Blessings was sophomore Brett Schell, who shot a second round 70 (-2) and put himself in 11th heading into Wednesday. The Florida native countered three bogeys with three birdies through 10 holes before making two birdies and going bogey free over his final eight holes. Schell has now finished under par in both rounds of competition this week after shooting a 71 (-1) during Monday's first round.

Kye Meeks saw a pair of firsts in his second round in Fayetteville. The redshirt-freshman logged his first collegiate round below par, shooting a 71 (-1), while also sinking the team's first eagle of the year on No. 15. Meeks made the turn at 2-under and remained in red figures coming down the stretch.

Wrapping up play for the Rebels on day two were Evan Brown and Sarut Vongchaisit. Brown ending his day with a 76 (+4) and Vongchaisit shot a 78 (+6). Brown now sits tied for 21st with his two-day score of 146. Vongchaisit enters day three tied for 33rd.

Par-4 scoring continued to be the Rebels' strongest point, playing the holes even through two rounds and seven shots better than the nearest team.

Arkansas leads the way on the team leaderboard following a 287 (-1) round on the day led by tournament leader Luke Long's second straight 67 (-5) on the day.

Ole Miss will tee off for their final round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational tomorrow morning at 10:15 a.m. CT off of Hole 1. Coverage on the GOLF Channel is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. CT.
