Soccer Suffers Heartbreaker in NCAA First Round

Rebels Bow Out in 2-1 Loss to Saint Louis

OXFORD, Miss. – An 89th minute dagger spelled heartbreak for No. 17 Ole Miss in the NCAA Championship First Round on Friday as the Rebels fell 2-1 to Saint Louis at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

The loss brought an end to the collegiate careers of four fifth-year seniors in Channing Foster, Molly Martin, Madisyn Pezzino and Sophie Dineen, a group which led the Rebs to four NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Rebels and Billikens were locked in a tight battle throughout the first half. Saint Louis broke through first, with Hannah Friedrich slipping in a through ball to Mattyn Summers, who slipped the ball by a charging Ashley Orkus and into the goal.

Ole Miss responded right from the kickoff as Haleigh Stackpole headed a long ball chipped forward to a streaking Mo O'Connor. The Oxford High School product split two defenders to break into the box alone, smashing a shot past Emily Puricelli to even the score just 13 seconds after the Billikens' goal.

The two teams took the 1-1 score into halftime, warming up for another 45 minutes on a chilly night in Oxford.

Just like the first 45, there wasn't much to split Ole Miss and Saint Louis in the ensuing 45. The Rebels had possibly their best look at goal in the 53rd minute, a strike from outside the 18 by Martin. The Memphis native hit it well but too close to the keeper, who easily made the save.

Orkus came up with a game-saving save in the 84th minute, stopping Caroline Kelly low on a 1-on-1 opportunity to keep the score level. Unfortunately, Orkus was given no chance on a sublime volleyed strike from Friedrich in the 89th minute, sending Saint Louis to the next round and ending an exciting season on the pitch for the Rebels.
