Defense Shines as Ole Miss Bounces Back Over Elon, 74-56

11/20/2021 | Men's Basketball

Rebels to Face Boise State (2-2) in Fifth-Place Game Sunday at Noon CT (ESPN2)

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ole Miss men's basketball used a stifling team defense and an efficient offensive attack to bounce back for a 74-56 victory over Elon in the second round of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic late Friday night.

The Rebels (3-1) were in the driver's seat from the jump, never relinquishing a lead that totaled 39:49 of game time. Ole Miss squashed an Elon (2-3) offense that entered the night shooting 46 percent overall and 41.1 percent from three to just 34.6 overall and a 3-of-17 output (.176) from beyond the arc – which included a 25 percent first half shooting clip that was the lowest by a Rebel opponent since holding UT Martin to the same on Dec. 22, 2020.

On the offensive side, Ole Miss received two strong outings from sophomore Jaemyn Brakefield and senior Jarkel Joiner, who both finished with 16 points on the night. The Rebels shot 49.1 percent on the night overall, their fourth game in a row to start the season above 46 percent.

"For not having many people in the gym at 10:30 (ET), we had a great energy tonight and a lot of maturity with our team," said Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis. "Coach (Mike Schrage) does an unbelievable job with that Elon team. They play the whole time and they're hard to guard. We held them to 3-for-17 from three, I thought we had balanced scoring, and it was really good to see Jaemyn shoot the ball from three. He looked really comfortable."

Brakefield, who is in his first season at Ole Miss after transferring from Duke, set a new career high with those 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting overall, a 3-of-4 line from three and a 5-of-6 mark from the charity stripe to help contribute to the Rebels' 18-of-28 free throw total on the night. He also added in four rebounds and a block, and he was the catalyst right from the start for Ole Miss, knocking down a deep corner-two to kick off what amounted to an 11-0 Rebel run through the first 4:36 of game action.

"We knew this was a bounce-back game and we knew Elon was a great team coming into this, so we didn't want to look down on them," Brakefield said. "We really just came into it with the short day we had to prepare, and we just keyed in on everything we needed to key in on."

That opening 11-0 run set the tone for the evening, and it did so with a crushing Ole Miss defense that held Elon to six different scoring droughts of two minutes or longer and three that lasted at least four minutes – the longest of which was a 4:50 stretch in the first half. The Rebel defense tallied 17 turnovers and scored 15 points off those mistakes by the Phoenix, the fourth game to start the season that Ole Miss has forced double-digit miscues.

Joiner led the team with two steals on the night to go along with his 16 points and four assists.

"Jarkel was tremendous tonight in starting up our defense," Davis said. "Matt Murrell was outstanding tonight, Luis (Rodriguez) guarded at a high level, I thought Robert Allen had a lot of juice tonight. Our perimeter defense tonight was just really good, and those were good offensive players that shoot for a high percentage. We just went with switching a bunch, really pressuring them, and just trying to run them off the line and I thought we did that for the most part."

Murrell, in his fourth career start, tallied seven points, three rebounds, one steal, a career-high four assists and a 5-of-6 clip from the free throw line. Tye Fagan also had a career night dishing the ball, notching a career-high six dimes to go along with 11 points, six boards and a steal. Robert Allen was the leading rebounder with eight rebounds to go along with four points.

Ole Miss will have Saturday off and conclude its stay in Charleston against Boise State (2-2) in the fifth-place game on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

"Now we have a day off tomorrow to prepare for what I think is no doubt is a great matchup," Davis said. "I think Boise State has a great chance to get into the NCAA Tournament and has a chance to win the Mountain West Conference."
