Another One: Men’s Hoops Topples No. 10 Missouri 80-59

2/10/2021 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – Unlike their previous two outings, it was Ole Miss that had the large lead, but the results remained the same for the third straight game as the Rebels (11-8, 6-6 SEC) brought down another top-10 opponent in The Pavilion and upset No. 10 ranked Missouri 80-59 Wednesday evening.

"Just what can you say," said Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis. "Had a couple days of great preparation. The big key was on the rebounds and assist. We ran good offense and beat a really good team. Now we have to turn our attention to South Carolina."

The Rebels put on one of their best offensive performances of the season, shooting 57 percent (29 of 51) from the floor with three Rebels in double figures. Jarkel Joiner led the way with 21 points (8 of 14), while Luis Rodriguez had a career-high 15 points. Devontae Shuler, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, also had 15 points, all of which came by going 5 of 9 from beyond the arc.

The Rebels dominated the glass with a +15 margin on the boards (34-19) and held a 28-18 edge in the paint. Defensively, KJ Buffen finished with two steals and three blocks to go along with his team-high rebounds. As a unit, the Rebels held Missouri to their second fewest scoring total in SEC play and took care of the rest on the other end, culminating in their largest top-10 victory since 2002.

Dru Smith, who shared SEC Player of the Week honors with Shuler, scored 17 points to lead the Tigers (13-4, 6-4 SEC). Ole Miss held Missouri's leading scorer, Xavier Pinson, to just six points. Big man Jeremiah Pinson was also limited to just six points, well below his 13.3 average.

The scoring started with three consecutive three-point baskets, with the first coming from Rodriguez wide open in the corner. However, back-to-back three pointers from Missouri's Kobe Brown forced Davis to burn a timeout just 1:20 into the game, down 6-3. The game sped up for both squads for the next six minutes as the Tigers took advantage of multiple turnovers. Ole Miss fired right back as they made six straight buckets and went on an 11-0 run to retake the lead 19-14 with 11:45 to go in the first half. The Rebels began contest going 8 of 10 from the floor.

Over the next seven minutes, both teams traded blows while struggling to pull away from each other. Going into the final media timeout of the first half, Missouri held a 35-34 lead before a pair of free throws from Joiner once again gave Ole Miss the lead. The Rebels kept that advantage going into the locker room up 42-37.

Ole Miss shot a white hot 62 percent (16 of 26) from the floor in the first half. Joiner led the way with 12 points, while Rodriguez had nine points and was perfect shooting (3 of 3). Shuler, Buffen and Romello White each had six points. The Tigers also had hot hands, shooting 54 percent (14 of 26) with Dru Smith having 11 first half points.

Rodriguez began the second half on a high note with a slam dunk off of a steal from White. Back-to-back three-pointers from Shuler gave Ole Miss a 57-41 lead just over five minutes into the second half. A free throw from Robert Allen on the following possession capped off a 16-4 run to begin the half. It would get even better for the Rebels. A putback slam from Sammy Hunter gave Ole Miss a 64-45 lead with 11:02 left to go. The Rebels stayed the course for the remainder of the contest, going up by as much as 24 to secure an emphatic top-10 win on Craddock Court.

After facing another top-10 team at home, the Rebels hit the road again. The week against teams from Columbia continues as Ole Miss heads to South Carolina (Feb. 13). It will be the Rebels' fourth road contest in six games. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
