Rifle Fires Program Record in Victory

2/13/2021 | Rifle

OXFORD, Miss. – No. 3 Ole Miss rifle picked up its 10th win of the season in record-setting fashion, firing its way past Memphis, 4734-4693, on Saturday afternoon. It marks the first time in program history the Rebels have earned double-digit victories in a season.

The Rebels' aggregate score of 4734 bested their previous school record of 4730, fired in the season opener. Their best score at home this season, Ole Miss boosted its three-score average to a 4725.67.

"I am so impressed with how this team just keeps getting better," said head coach Marsha Beasley. "Everyone is working exceptionally hard, and each week, a few more pieces seem to come together for us. Today it showed in the total score and a new school record. I was also really happy to see our depth. We had eight shooters above 590 in air rifle and six above the 580 mark in smallbore, a truly impressive accomplishment for our team."

Ole Miss (10-1, 6-1) got things going early in smallbore, firing a 2354, the second-best mark in school history and fifth-best in the NCAA this season. They followed it up by tying the program record in air rifle with a team score of 2380.

Of the 18 athletes competing between the two teams, the top four scores were all fired by Rebels. Lea Horvath continued to shine, pacing the field with an 1189. She was followed by a trio of teammates, Abby Buesseler, Kristen Derting and Erin Walsh, all of whom eclipsed the 1180 mark with identical scores of 1181. The score was also a new career-high for Walsh.

The Rebels built up a 33-point advantage over the Tigers after smallbore, thanks to dominant prone shooting as four individuals fired marks of 199 or better, and all five counters posted final scores over 580. Horvath led the way with an impressive 590, followed by Walsh with a career-high 589 that featured her third straight 200 prone. Walsh also had a 198 standing for the second week in a row, a score that ties the school record. Derting posted a 588 for the second consecutive match, and Buesseler continued her sharpshooting at home with a 587. Jillian Zakrzeski rounded out the scoring for the counters with a 580.

Fans would have been on the edge of their seats in a normal season watching Horvath turn in another special air rifle performance. The freshman was just a shot shy of perfection after rattling off 10s on her first 59 shots. She hit a 9.6 on her final shot, capping off the thrilling relay where all six Rebels fired marks of 590 or better. Freshman Martina Gratz smashed her career-high by three points, turning in a 596 in the discipline. Buesseler was sharp in air, using two perfect strings of 100 to help her achieve a final score of 594. Just a point behind her was Derting with a 593. Walsh and Zakrzeski posted marks of 592 and 590, respectively, to cap off the team score.

Not factoring into the scoring effort were Kamilla Kisch and Claire O'Neel with scores over 590. Kisch posted a 593, while O'Neel fired a 592.

Led by David Crenshaw and Taylor Gibson, Memphis turned in its second-best team score with season with a 4693 (2321 in smallbore and 2372 in air rifle). Crenshaw and Gibson fired identical marks of 1177, tied for fifth in the match.

Since the two Great American Rifle Conference teams already competed against each other earlier in the fall, the match did not count for the conference standings and was scored as a non-conference matchup.

Next up for Ole Miss is its NCAA Qualifier match with Jacksonville State. The Rebels will host the Gamecocks in Oxford and simultaneously compete in its final GARC regular season match against Army virtually.
