Ole Miss Sits in Third Heading into Air Rifle Competition

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Competing in its first NCAA Rifle Championship in 15 years, Ole Miss finished third overall in smallbore with a team score of 2337 and sits in third moving into the final day. Individually, freshman Lea Horvath secured a third place finish in the smallbore final.

All five individuals put up scores of 580 or better for the Rebels and Horvath qualified to compete in the final, where she placed third, tied for the highest finish for an Ole Miss individual in program history with Alison Weisz, who placed third in air rifle in 2016.

With the top four teams all competing in the afternoon, it was a closely contested second relay. Kentucky, TCU and West Virginia all toed the line with the Rebels. The Wildcats fired a smallbore score of 2352 to claim the title in the discipline, followed by the Horned Frogs in the Runner-Up position (2342).

Horvath got off to a quick start, posting a 198 in kneeling. She followed it up with a 198 prone before finishing with a mark of 588, seventh overall, to qualify for the final. The freshman was followed by a trio of teammates with identical scores of 583. Abby Buesseler, Kristen Derting and Erin Walsh all had a solid day on the range. Buesseler and Walsh looked sharp through kneeling and prone, while Derting was able to close out her score with a 194 in standing. The trio was 12th, 13th and 14th overall out of the field of 45. Jillian Zakrzeski rounded out the counters with a 581.

In the final, Horvath jumped out to an early lead in the second series of five shots. The freshman held a five tenths-of-a-point lead going into the change over into prone with a mark of 155.1. She held onto the lead through 10 shots in prone, but Kentucky's Mary Tucker took advantage of a 9.7 from Horvath and took the lead moving into standing. Horvath fell to fourth in single-elimination shots but stayed alive on the bubble for a podium finish in third with a 449.1.
