Senior Guard Collects Pair of All-District Honors
OXFORD, Miss. – Devontae Shuler continues to be recognized for his stellar senior season. The Ole Miss guard was named to a pair of all-district teams Tuesday (March 16). The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) put Shuler on an all-district team (District IV), while the National Association of Basketball Coaches tabbed him as second team all-district (District 20).
The announcements marked the third straight season that a Rebel guard landed on the all-district teams. Breein Tyree earned NABC and USBWA All-District honors in his final two seasons in Oxford (2018-19, 2019-20).
Shuler has had his best career as a Rebel this season, leading the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) and assists (3.3 apg). The Ole Miss guard's 1.4 assist/turnover ratio is seventh in the conference, while he ranks eighth in assists, steals (1.6 spg) and minutes (32.8 mpg). Shuler also makes two three-pointers per game, good enough for ninth in the SEC.
Throughout the season, Shuler has recorded eight 20-point games. That includes a 26-point night at Auburn (Feb. 6) in which he drilled a game-winning jumper at the buzzer in overtime. After that game, he collected SEC Player of the Week accolades for the first time in his career. One week later, after helping Ole Miss take down No. 10 Missouri, Shuler returned to his home state of South Carolina and scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Rebels to a victory over the Gamecocks (Feb. 13). He has led Ole Miss to a strong second half of the season, as the Rebels have won eight of their last 11 games.
Over 124 career games, which includes 99 starts, Shuler has already etched his name in the Ole Miss record books. He ranks third in career steals (185), eighth in career three-pointers made (178), 10th in career assists (329) and 20th in career points (1,319).
With Ole Miss serving as one of four "replacement teams" for March Madness, unless the NCAA reaches out before Tuesday's 5 p.m. CT deadline, Shuler and the Rebels head to Texas as a No. 1 seed in the NIT. Ole Miss begins postseason basketball against Louisiana Tech at Comerica Center (Frisco, Texas) on Friday (March 19). Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
