Graduate Transfer Records Highest Field Goal Percentage in a Season

OXFORD, Miss. – In his lone season in Oxford, Romello White made sure he left his mark. The graduate transfer made 122 of his 188 shot attempts (64.9 percent) for the best field goal percentage in Ole Miss basketball history.

White broke Marcus Hicks' record that lasted 22 years. During the 1998-99 season, Hicks shot 63.8 percent (162 of 254) from the floor to break Fred Cox's mark (62.8 percent) set in 1974. The minimum number of attempts to qualify for the school record is 150 throughout a single season.

White brought his toughness and physicality to Ole Miss, dominating the post. The Atlanta, Georgia, native averaged 11.4 ppg and 6.0 rpg, recording four double-doubles and four 20-point games along the way. On the defensive end of the floor, he registered 36 blocks to lead the Rebels and crack the SEC's top 10. He shot at least 75 percent in 12 of the Ole Miss' 28 games, including a trio of 7 for 8 (87.5 percent) nights. Earning his first start as a Rebel, he made seven of his eight shot attempts on his way to a game-high 20 points versus UNCW (Dec. 12).

In his first SEC Game, at Alabama (Dec. 29), White led Ole Miss with team highs in points (20) and rebounds (11). He saved his best game for the other SEC team from Alabama, exploding for a career-high 30 points (14 of 18 FG) to go along with 10 rebounds in the overtime victory at Auburn (Feb. 6). His 14 made field goals were the most by an SEC player this season. He became the first Rebel to record a double-double with at least 30 points since Justin Reed accomplished the feat in 2004. In the SEC Tournament quarterfinals against LSU (March 12), White tallied 20 points on 7 of 8 shooting to go along with a season-high 13 boards. The performance marked the 20th double-double of White's career, his fourth in an Ole Miss uniform.

Before White arrived in Oxford, he shot 60.5 percent during his career at Arizona State. The career field goal percentage ranks second in Sun Devil history as he cracked the school's top 10 best single-season field goal percentages twice.

White started 25 of 28 games this season, helping lead the Rebels to a 16-12 record that included a 10-8 mark in SEC play. Ole Miss finished sixth in the conference, exceeding the media's preseason poll prediction of ninth and just missing out on an NCAA Tournament berth. Settling for the NIT, White and the Rebels earned the 22nd postseason appearance in school history.
