Ole Miss Women’s Golf Duo Set to Compete in Amateur Tournament
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Ole Miss women's golf team will be well represented this week at the Augusta National Women's Amateur beginning Wednesday in Georgia.
Seniors Julia Johnson and Kennedy Swann will both compete in the second edition of the event, March 31-April 3. Head coach Kory Henkes will serve as the caddy for Johnson, while assistant coach Zack Byrd will be on the bag for Swann.
The tournament, taking place a week before The Masters, will feature 82 of the best women's amateur golfers in the world. The first two rounds will be held at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Columbia County, Georgia. Following the second round, the field will be cut to 30 with the final round to be played Saturday at Augusta National on NBC.
Golf Channel's "Golf Today" and "Golf Central" will deliver on-site highlights, live reports and news coverage throughout the championship. "Live From the Masters" will begin Friday, April 2, at Augusta National to provide coverage.
Johnson, who currently No. 59 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), currently leads the Rebels and ranks fourth in the SEC with a 71.8 stroke average this season. Johnson has registered five straight top 10 finishes for the Rebels, including a runner-up finish at both the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate and Gators Invitational.
The St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native was originally chosen to participate in the 2020 event after a stellar 2019-20 season. Johnson earned second team All-America honors last season and led the SEC with a 70.72 stroke average, the lowest single-season stroke average in program history. Johnson finished inside the top-15 in every event as a junior.
Swann, who recently participated in a practice session in advance of the 2021 Curtis Cup Match, is second on the team only to Johnson with a 72.7 stroke average and is coming off a second place finish at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
"It is truly an honor to be invited to one of the most prestigious women's amateur events in the world," Swann said. "I am looking forward to spending this week in Augusta and feel very prepared going in. The coaches did a great job with practice this last week and I look to build on the momentum from my finish in Georgia."
Swann earned co-medalist honors at the prestigious East Lake Cup in October. Besides her win in Atlanta, Swann posted an 11th place finish at the Blessings Collegiate earlier during the fall. Swann also picked up a match play win at the East Lake Cup with a 1-up win over Texas' Sophie Guo in the semifinals.
In August of 2020, Swann finished top 20 in stroke play at the 120th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in Maryland, before advancing to the quarterfinal round in the match play portion of the event.
