No. 29 Sabina Machalova Narrowly Loses to Duke’s No. 19 Georgia Drummy, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6

ORLANDO, Fla. – Ole Miss' Sabina Machalova fought hard in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships on Sunday. Machalova came up short in three sets versus Duke's Georgia Drummy, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6.

Sabina Machalova earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Singles Championship after an impressive All-SEC First Team season for the Rebels. Machalova was ousted in the first round of the individual tournament as the Ole Miss 2021 women's tennis season comes to a close. She concludes the 2020-21 season with a 15-11 overall record in singles. Machalova was the first Rebel to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships since Arianne Hartono became the first Rebel to win the women's individual tournament in 2018.

Machalova and Drummy battled back and forth across three sets. Machalova claimed the first set before dropping the second and third sets to the All-ACC Blue Devil. Machalova has lost in three sets after winning the first in back-to-back matches.

The match started with both players holding serve through the first four games. Machalova was broken by Drummy to trail 3-2, then exchanged breaks to tie the set 3-3. Both Machalova and Drummy held serve over the next three games as Machalova took a 5-4 lead. Machalova then jumped ahead 40-15 and broke Drummy's serve to claim the first set 6-4.

Both Machalova and Drummy held serve in the first two games of the second set. Drummy broke Machalova to take a 2-1 lead, but Machalova broke right back to re-tie the match at 2-2. Machalova's serve was broken again to fall behind 3-2 to Drummy. Both student-athletes held serve the remainder of the set and Drummy proceeded to win the second, 6-4, to force a third and final set.

The deciding set was controlled throughout by Drummy. Machalova was broken twice to go down 3-0, then she fell behind 4-0 on Drummy's serve. Machalova won the next game to pull the third set to 4-1 in favor of Drummy, but it proved to be little too late for a comeback by the Rebel. Drummy broke Machalova to take the set, 6-1, and win the match. Machalova fell 6-4, 4-6, 1-6 in a close contest.
