Women’s Golf Makes History, Match Play at NCAA Championship

5/24/2021 | Women's Golf

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – They say records are meant to broken. How about shattered?

The Ole Miss women's golf team continued its historic season Monday as they qualified for match play at the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history.

The Rebels fired a 288 (-4) Monday afternoon at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, to secure the No. 4 seed in Tuesday's match play format. The four-round total of 1159 (296-291-288-284) was the lowest tournament total ever by a Rebel women's team at the NCAA Championship. Monday's fourth round 284 was also a program-best round by Ole Miss at the NCAA event.

"This team has worked so hard, not just the last year, but for the last four to five years to get to this point," head coach Kory Henkes said. "I couldn't be more pumped for this team and everyone else that's been part of the helping build the Ole Miss program to where we are today.

Leading the way again was senior Julia Johnson, who fired off her third consecutive 71 (-1) on Monday to finish tied for fifth overall at 2-under – the best individual finish by a Rebel at the NCAA Championships in program history. The Palmer Cup invitee was just as consistent in her final 18, carding four birdies with two apiece coming on the front and back nine.

Johnson led a crew of three Rebels to finish within the top-15, which included Andrea Lignell and Chiara Tamburlini in a tie for 15th place at 2-over for the tournament.

Lignell owned the best round of the day for Ole Miss at 70 (-2), which included three birdies and – for the second straight day – an eagle on No. 7.

Tamburlini, meanwhile, overcame a 3-over start through her first eight holes by nabbing four birdies over her final 10 holes played – including two in a row on 8 and 9 – to finish at even par on the day.

Kennedy Swann battled back for her best round of the NCAA Championship as well, firing off a 71 (-1) to finish tied for 32nd at 5-over.

Smilla Sonderby carded the best round of her young collegiate career on Monday with an even-par 72. The freshman from Fredercia, Denmark, registered 16 pars and one birdie. Her only blemish on the day was a bogey on No. 4.

Ole Miss now faces a date with destiny in its first ever trip to match play of the NCAA Championships. The 4th-seeded Rebels will square off against No. 5 Texas on Tuesday morning at 9:10 a.m. CT.

Ole Miss defeated Texas 4.5-0.5 earlier in the season at the East Lake Cup, but the Longhorns were without two key players in Agathe Laisne and Sara Kouskova.

GOLF Channel will have live coverage Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. CT.

"I'm really excited for our girls to have this opportunity, on a national stage, to show everyone just how good they are," Henkes said.
