Weisz Wraps Up Competition in Tokyo at Olympic Games

TOKYO – This past week was a dream come true for Ole Miss rifle alum Alison Weisz.

Weisz officially became an Olympian after competing in two events with the United States at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Representing the Stars and Stripes, the former Rebel notched a sixth-place finish in the 10m air rifle mixed team events and 14th place finish in the women's 10m air rifle.

On Saturday, July 24, Weisz made her Olympic debut in the women's 10m air rifle event, placing 14th overall in the field of 50. She got off to a strong start with a 104.1 on her first series and followed it up with a 104.8 and a 105.0 to put her in 13th at the halfway point. In her next two 10-shot series, the Belgrade, Montana, native posted a 103.7 and a 103.9. Weisz capped off her performance with a bang, firing a 10.9 on her final shot for a 105.4 series and bringing her total score to 626.9. Only 1.6 points separated Weisz from the eighth position, which advanced to the event final.

The 2017 Ole Miss grad also competed in the mixed team event on Tuesday. Weisz was partnered with Will Shaner, a Kentucky student-athlete and 2020 men's air rifle gold medalist. The duo looked sharp in the first qualification stage, turning in the fifth-best combined score, 629.7, to comfortably advance to the second stage. Individually, Weisz fired a 312.9 with her 30 shots.

With eight teams remaining in stage two of the event, Weisz and Shaner were battling for one of the top four spots to earn a chance to compete for a medal. After 10 shots each, the U.S. pairing sat in fifth place but was unable to make up any ground. Weisz and Shaner finished sixth in the event with a score of 416.8, just three tenths shy of qualifying for the bronze medal match.
