Johnson’s Score of 67 on Day One is Rebels’ Best, Second Overall
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – The Ole Miss women's golf team started off their 2021 fall season with an opening round score of 290 (+2) on Monday at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Lake Elmo, Minnesota.
The tournament, which is held at the Royal Golf Club, features 11 teams that were included in GolfChannel.com's preseason top-30 rankings, including the Rebels.
"The hole locations were challenging today and really tested our discipline and short games," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We fell short in those areas as a whole. I was really proud of the fight from Ellen and Julia down the stretch to finish under par."
Senior Julia Johnson led the way for the Rebels, finishing 5-under on the day with a 67, to sit in sole possession of second place individually. The two-time All-American saw herself at even par through the front nine, before surging in the back half to climb to the top of the leaderboard.
Johnson collected a total of five birdies on the day on No. 3, 9, 14, 15, and 17, while also capping off her day on No. 18 with an eagle. Johnson ended the day tied for first overall in the field in par-5 scoring (-4).
Ellen Hume, of Whitwell, England, also saw herself finishing under par on day one, shooting a 71 (-1) to finish tied for 15th heading into Round 2. Hume came out to a hot start on the day, shooting two-under in the first nine holes, before collecting a trio of bogeys and a pair of birdies to finish a stroke below par.
Sophomore Smilla Sonderby opened up her fall campaign by finishing the day tied for 32nd after her 74 first round total (+2). The Danish national saw a mid-day double-bogey at No. 11, while also collecting three birdies in her first round of play on No. 6, 10, and 15.
Andrea Lignell, who arrived in Minnesota last night as a late lineup replacement, put together an opening round score of 78 (+6) for the Rebels, while redshirt-freshman McKinley Cunningham shot an 81 (+9) in her collegiate debut with Ole Miss. Cunningham tallied her first birdie with the team at No. 9, while also closing out her day with a birdie on No. 18.
Holding the team lead at the end of day one is South Carolina, whose 10-under score of 278 puts them seven strokes up on second-place Duke heading into Round 2.
"We have to forget about today's round and find a way to dig deep tomorrow," Henkes said. "We need to do a better job of shaking things off and staying in a positive head space if we want to compete at the highest level."
The Rebels are set to tee off Tuesday morning at 8:55 a.m. CT for Round 2.
