Ole Miss Alum and 2018 NCAA Champion Reaches Round of 16 at WTA Luxembourg
KOCKELSCHEUR, Luxembourg – Arianne Hartono earned the biggest win of her professional career, defeating world No. 68 Anna-Lena Friedsam on Tuesday in the first round of the WTA 250 BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open. Hartono reached the Round of 16 of the tournament, falling to 2017 French Open Champion Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday.
The first NCAA champion in Ole Miss women's tennis history achieved a new first on Tuesday, winning a match at the WTA tour level in a main draw. Hartono battled through three tight sets to defeat Friedsam 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4).
Hartono advanced to the Round of 16 to take on the reigning event champion, Latvia's world No. 30 Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday morning. Hartono fell in a tough three-set match versus the former top-five ranked player in the world, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6. Hartono outserved Ostapenko in the match six aces to three, and had a 79 percent first serve percentage compared to Ostapenko's 70 percent clip. The Luxembourg Open is Ostapenko's first event since falling to Angelique Kerber in the Round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open on August 19. Ostapenko withdrew from U.S. Open for medical reasons.
Hartono reached the main draw of the tournament after earning two straight-set victories in qualifying. She defeated WTA No. 155 Tamara Korpatsch 6-0, 6-2 on Saturday and won 7-5, 6-2 versus Taysia Morderger on Sunday.
"I was going into the event not expecting anything," Hartono said. "I originally signed up to play doubles, and when I got here the singles qualifying was open so I threw my name in there! I was excited to play in the opening qualifying round in my second career WTA event, and after winning my first match I just rode a wave. All I had to do was play one point at a time. I tried to stay in the moment as much as I could, and was able to play my best tennis. I was confident and did not have a lot of pressure on me. I'm very proud to have been able to take a set from Ostapenko, but I will never be satisfied from losing. I just saw the match as another opportunity to play and a great learning experience."
The 2021 Luxembourg Open marks the 25th edition of the international event.
Hartono is currently ranked a career-best No. 300 in the WTA Singles Rankings and is No. 93 in the ITF rankings. Hartono will look to enter the top-300 for the first time in her career next week. She is also currently ranked a career-best world No. 239 in the WTA doubles rankings.
Hartono, the 2018 NCAA Singles Champion was also a two-time All-American (2018) and the first Ole Miss women's tennis member to be named SEC Player of the Year (2018). She graduated from the University of Mississippi in Spring 2018 and has toured on the professional tennis circuit over the past three years.
