Rifle Finishes Third At Conference Championship

O’Neel Fires 599 in Air Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ole Miss rifle wrapped up competition at the GARC Championships, finishing third overall for the second straight season. The Rebels fired a 2374 in air rifle to bring their team score to 4717.
On the weekend, Lea Horvath placed sixth in the field of 70 with an 1184 aggregate score. She paced the Rebels over the course of the two-day championship match. Claire O'Neel also had a competition, firing an 1181 to finish just outside the top 10 overall.
Competing in air rifle on Saturday, O'Neel was one of two individuals to fire a 599, the top score in the match. The junior was one shot shy of perfection, hitting a 9.6 on her 50th shot of the morning. She went on to earn a spot in the final, where she finished eighth overall with a 121.4 through 12 shots.
Abby Buesseler and M'Leah Lambdin were first on the line for the Rebels. Buesseler contributed a 590 to the team score, while Lambdin posted a 585. Juniors O'Neel and Kristen Derting shot in the second relay. O'Neel tied her career-high with the 599, and Derting added a 590 as a counter. Three Rebels competed in the final relay of the match. Horvath tallied a 593, Martina Gratz fired a 592 and Jillian Zakrzeski turned in a 590 to bring the team's total to 2374.
Ole Miss will now return to Oxford for a week to prep for the NCAA Rifle Championship in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on March11-12.
