Opening Round 72 Has Lignell Tied for Seventh Entering Second Round
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Ole Miss women's golf team concluded the opening round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on Monday by carding a team score of 301 (+13), putting the Rebels in eighth place heading into the second round of action.
Only the top four finishing teams will clinch spots in the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, along with the top two individuals from non-advancing teams.
"The conditions were tough out here today. The course was playing pretty firm and we had some wind, but I just think we made too many little mistakes that we usually do better than what we did today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "I think it's something that we're eager to work on this afternoon on the range and green so we can come back with some fight tomorrow."
Andrea Lignell led the charge individually for the Rebels, with the Gothenburg, Sweden, native carding an even 72 to conclude her round tied for seventh. Opening her round two-under through her opening nine holes of the day, Lignell currently sits just outside of qualifying for the NCAA Championships as an individual, ranking third amongst golfers outside of the top four teams in Tallahassee.
Finishing tied for 25th on the day, Chiara Tamburlini saw the second-best Rebel scorecard to open the Tallahassee Regional with a 75 (+3). Tamburlini opened her round shooting par on her first eight holes, before ultimately claiming four bogeys and a birdie on No. 8 to finish off her round three-over par.
Battling back from a tough opening nine holes to start her day, senior Julia Johnson's round ended with the senior carding a score of 76 (+4) to open up her final NCAA Regional as a Rebel. Johnson, despite shooting 4-over on her front nine, battled back to go even on the back nine to end her day tied for 34th.
Freshmen McKinley Cunningham and Natacha Host Husted capped off the Rebels' day from Tallahassee with Cunningham logging a 78 (+6) and Host Husted carding an 81 (+9). Cunningham's 47th place performance on the day saw her net three total birdies, two of which came in her opening three holes, while Host Husted's round would put her into a tie for 59th heading into the second day of action.
No. 2 seeded UCLA currently leads the way on the team leaderboard after day one, carding a 288 (E) team score. Rounding out the top four teams are regional host Florida State (+2), Mississippi State (+3) and a three-way tie currently being held by Miami, South Carolina and Quinnipiac at 11-over par.
The Rebels will return to action for the second round at Seminole Legacy Golf Club on Tuesday beginning at 7 a.m. CT, where Ole Miss will be teeing off from No. 10 to begin day two.
