Men’s Basketball Battles to Victory in Tad Pad Over Sam Houston 70-67
11/17/2023 | Men's Basketball
OXFORD, Miss. – With just over a minute remaining Jaylen Murray brought the crowd to a roar with a three pointer to give Ole Miss the lead, as the Rebels would hold on to defeat Sam Houston State 70-67 Friday night in the Tad Smith Coliseum.
Putting up over 20 points for the second time in this early season, Allen Flanigan scored a game-high 23, highlighted by a career-best 14 made free throws after drawing 11 fouls. Matthew Murrell added 15 points.
Ole Miss (4-0) got off to a hot start after Murrell began the night with a three, later grabbing a steal and breakaway dunk before a bucket by Jamarion Sharp made it 9-3. Midway through the first half, Austin Nunez found Sharp down low for the dunk followed by a strong make in the paint from Robert Cowherd to give the Rebels their largest lead of the night, up 22-11 with 8:47 on the clock.
The double-digit lead would fall, however, as Sam Houston (1-3) clawed back with a pair of threes at the end of the period to take a 33-31 advantage into halftime.
No team would lead by more than five in the second half of action, as the two drew even nine different times with seven lead changes. The first major lead came to Ole Miss, after a layup from TJ Caldwell made it 49-44 with 11:12 to go. The Bearkats quickly regained the lead and would not trail until just over two minutes left in the game.
As time wound down, Jaemyn Brakefield broke a 63-all tie with an and-one conversion at 2:09. Sam Houston responded, stepping out in front one last time on a layup to set the score at 67-66 with 1:29 left. Following a timeout to draw up a play, the Rebels sent the Tad Pad crowd into a frenzy as Murray connected from deep to make it a 69-67 game.
Flanigan would sink his 14th and final free throw to help close out the game, with a defensive stop from Ole Miss on the following possession sealing the win.
Five different Rebels recorded a block on the defensive end, led by Sharp and Murray with two each. Ole Miss entered the game averaging 5.0 swats per game, ranking No. 55 in the country, and added seven tonight.
Davon Barnes led the Bearkats in scoring with 22 points, sinking four shots from beyond the arc. Jaden Ray added 13 while Lamar Wilkerson scored 11.
Up next for Ole Miss is their first road game of the 2023-24 season, as the Rebels travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple on Wednesday, November 22 at 2:30 p.m. CT and on ESPN+.
