Men’s Basketball Defends Home Court with 77-68 Victory

OXFORD, Miss. – Hitting the 20-point mark each in back-to-back games, Jaylen Murray and Matthew Murrell helped lead the charge for Ole Miss as they defeated Mount St. Mary's in the SJB Pavilion 77-68 on Tuesday night.
 
Murray set a new career-high with 26 points on the evening, while Murrell scored a season-best 24 points. Jaemyn Brakefield led the team in rebounds with a new career mark, grabbing 13 boards.
 
The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Ole Miss (8-0) used a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead. Once more, the Mountaineers (2-6) stepped out in front, with a hard drive and score from Murray evening the board at 15-all midway through the half.
 
With just under five minutes before halftime the two teams were locked at 22 points each, but it would be the Rebels who took the advantage into the locker room, up five, 39-34. Going 7-7 from the field to close out the first period, the Rebels scored a season-high first half points.
 
Minutes into the second half of action, Murrell connected on one of his three makes from beyond the arc to give Ole Miss a double-digit lead. His third three-point basket of the night would later give the Rebels their largest lead of the evening at 17, up 66-49 with 6:31 left on the clock.
 
Ranking No. 21 in the NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio entering the evening, Ole Miss once again had a positive ratio on the evening at 16 to 13. The Rebels were led by Murray with six assists to just one turnover on the night. Over the last three games, Murray owns an assist-to-turnover ratio of 9.5 (19 assists, two turnovers), while averaging 20.0 points.
 
With a pair of blocks for the Rebels, Jamarion Sharp now has 299 in his collegiate career. Ole Miss entered tonight's game averaging 6.7 swats per game, the fourth-best mark in the country, and totaled seven against Mount St. Mary's.
 
The Mountaineers were led by De'Shayne Montgomery who scored 22 points off the bench. Dakota Leffew added 16 points and six assists.
 
Ole Miss will leave Oxford next for their second road game of the season, traveling to Orlando to take on UCF on Saturday, December 10 at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
