Rebels Turn Their Attention to NCAA Regionals, Set to Run May 5-7
AUBURN, Ala. – Ole Miss men's tennis saw their SEC Tournament come to an end in the SEC Quarterfinals on Friday, as the 7-seeded Rebels fell 4-0 to No. 2 seed Tennessee at Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Rebels (17-9, 6-6 SEC) collided with the No. 9 ranked Volunteers (21-6, 10-2 SEC) with a shot in the SEC Semifinals on the line, but strong play out of the gate from UT helped push the Vols past the Ole Miss side.
Tennessee got to work right away in the doubles portion of the match, with the Volunteers earning a quick 6-0 victory in Court 2 doubles. The Rebels remained steadfast as the No. 1 doubles pairing of Simon Junk and John Hallquist Lithen fought back from 4-1 in their match against the No. 5 doubles team in the nation to trail 5-4.
The duo wouldn't get the chance to finish their match out, however, as Tennessee would claim Court 3 doubles by a score of 6-3 to secure the match's doubles point.
Moving to singles play, the Volunteers continued their strong play as the UT squad captured first set victories in five out of six matches. Freshman Noah Schlagenhauf was the lone Rebel to win his opening set, as he battled his way to a 7-6(1) tiebreaker victory in the No. 5 position before his match ultimately went unfinished.
The Volunteers saw straight-set wins on Courts 3, 4 and 6 to clinch the victory over the Rebels, 4-0, and advance to the SEC Semifinals. The remaining three singles matches for the Rebels would remain unfinished.
