Women’s Golf Readies for 2023 NCAA Championships

Rebels Return to NCAA Championships for Fourth Time in Program History

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Ole Miss women's golf team returns to Scottsdale for the second time in the last three years, hoping to take back the title of national champions. The Rebels are set to begin play at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships, Friday, May 19. at the Grayhawk Golf Club.
 
The 156-person field is comprised of 30 teams. Additionally, six women not on those already qualified teams will compete with the field for the individual championship.
 
Players will first compete in three 18-hole roads of stroke-play competition from Friday to Sunday. Following the third round, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top nine individuals for Monday.
 
Monday's fourth round of stroke play will take place, at which point the individual national champion will be crowned. Following the fourth round, the field will be cut to the top eight teams to move on to the match play bracket beginning Tuesday, which will be seeded in order of finish in stroke play.
 
A knockout match play competition will then take place to determine the team national champion. Quarterfinal and semifinal match play rounds will be held Tuesday, May 23, and the Championship will be on Wednesday, May 24.
 
GOLF Channel will provide live coverage for the final three days of the championships. Coverage will feature individual stroke play national championships and the team match play semifinals and finals.

Elle Johnson (Sr.*)
-- Currently shooting a season stroke average of 75.30 in 2022-23
-- Saw a career weekend at the Clemson Invitational, earning a career-best finish of eighth place along with a career-low 54-hole score of 214 (-2)
-- Made her Rebel debut at the Cougar Classic, finishing tied for 34th
-- Nearly cracked the top 20 at The Ally after competing as an individual, shooting a 227 to finish 27th
-- 2022 Florida Women's Amateur Stroke Play Champion
-- Shot a course record round of 65 (-6) at Coral Creek Club in Placida, Florida to help claim the Florida Am title

-- Brings a 2022-23 stroke average of 75.46 into the Athens Regional

 THE COURSE

Playing at 6,383 total yards as a par 72, the Grayhawk Golf Club opened for public play in 1994. Over its history, the Grayhawk Golf Club has proudly hosted golf enthusiasts from amateurs to professionals. The two courses of Talon and Raptor have seen their fair share of competitive tournaments, including the NCAA Men's and Women's Championships the last three years, National Car Rental PGA Jr. League Championships since 2012, the Thunderbird International Junior from 2000 to 2019, the Waste Management Phoenix Open Pro-Ams from 1996-2012, and the 1995, 1997 and 1998 Anderson Consulting World Championships of Golf. Specifically, the Raptor course is listed among the best public courses in Arizona by Golfweek and hosted a PGA Tour event – the Frys.com Open from 2007-2009.

 REBELS IN THE RANKINGS

The Ole Miss women's golf squad enters the NCAA Championships ranked as the No. 18 team in the nation according to Golfstat, as well as ranking No. 19 in the country according to Golfweek. Andrea Lignell continues to pace the Rebels in terms of individual rankings, with Lignell holding the No. 10 and No. 12 rankings overall by Golfweek and Golfstat, respectively. Chair Tamburlini also holds a spot in the Top 50 of each poll, coming in at No. 17 according to Golfweek and No. 18 according to Golfstat. Sophomore Natacha Host Husted round out the individual rankings for the Rebels, coming in at No. 237 according to Golfstat.

 BECOMING A HABIT

The Rebels will appear in the NCAA Women's Golf Championships for the fourth time in program history all happening in the last five years. Chiara Tamburlini represented the program in 2022 as an individual. In 2021, Ole Miss achieved the pinnacle of college golf, winning the first ever women's team national title in school history in the very same location of Scottsdale, Arizona. The team earned the No. 4 seed heading into match play and went on to defeat Texas, Arizona and finally Oklahoma State for the title.

 FINISHING STRONG

As a team, the Rebels has found a knack for performing their best in the final round of the tournament. Ole Miss has hit their best round score in the final round of the last seven tournaments, including the SEC Championships and NCAA Athens Regional. Entering the final day in a three-way tie for the fifth and final spot that advances, the Rebels rolled up their sleeves and shot their best round of the week in Athens with a 290 (+2) to finish 17-over par over the tournament's three rounds, jumping up into fourth place.

 LIGNELL NAMED TO THE FINAL ANNIKA AWARD WATCH LIST

Andrea Lignell found herself amongst 15 of the nation's top collegiate women's golfers named to The ANNIKA Award First Spring Watch List, presented by Stifel. The award is given annually to the most outstanding women's college golfer, as voted on by players, coaches and media. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native has had a historic run for the Rebels with Top 3 finishes in five of her eight tournament appearances in 2022-23, including two tournament wins. This marks the second time this season that Lignell has found her way onto the award's watch list, having been named to the final fall watch list with teammate Chiara Tambrulini earlier in the season.
