Women’s Golf Comes Up Short in Third Day at NCAA Championships
5/21/2023 | Women's Golf
Andrea Lignell Continues into Next Round for Chance at Individual Title
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Ole Miss women's golf falls short of the cutoff at the NCAA Championships, finishing in 28th place with a three-round score of 898 (+34). Despite the team not advancing further into the tournament, Andrea Lignell's performance has her moving on as an individual.
Entering the day, the Rebels were tied for 20th and only four strokes back of the cutoff. For the first part of day three, Ole Miss got even closer with other teams struggling in the morning. However, the team slipped down the leaderboard later in the round.
Lignell continued to pace the Rebels with her second straight under-par round. The senior finished shooting a 71 (-1) for an overall total of 215 (-1) through three-days. Lignell was consistent throughout, hitting two birdies and scoring par on 15 of 18 holes. Her one blemish came on Hole 1. Moving up 18 spots and tying for 20th, Lignell finished with the fifth highest score of individuals not on advancing teams. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native will play one more round of golf for a chance at an individual title.
"Today was a lot tougher pitch so I just thought to play safe like just middle of the green on a lot of the holes and just be patient and wait for a putt to drop."
Switzerland native Chiara Tamburlini collected two birdies on her way to a score of 78 (+6). In her third and final NCAA appearance, Tamburlini shot a 228 (+12). Elle Johnson wrapped up her first NCAA action, shooting 154 (+10) in the final two rounds.
NCAA Championship first-timers, Natacha Host Husted and Nicole Gal, both finished the day, stroking an 81 (+9) and three total birdies. Husted had the Rebels' second lowest total score of 226 (+10) at her first NCAA Championships. The sophomore ended the round on a high note, sinking both her birdies in the final three holes.
As an individual, Lignell tees off tomorrow at 2:12 CT on Hole 10. She is nine strokes away from the top spot.
"I thought I played really solid today and gave myself a lot of opportunities just didn't have the putter going. So, I'm just excited going into tomorrow with the same gameplan and hopefully the same shots I had today."
