OXFORD, Miss. – If you like blocked shots, the Sandy and John Black Pavilion at Ole Miss is the place to be.
The Ole Miss men's and women's basketball teams are blocking more shots than any other two teams in the nation. Chris Beard's men's squad ranks No. 1 in the nation with 6.7 blocks per game. Yolett McPhee-McCuin's squad is also averaging 6.7 erased shots per contest, good for No. 4 on the women's side.
Together, the Rebels are averaging 13.4 blocks per game, more than any other pair of teams in college basketball.
It was a record-setting Wednesday night for Beard's club in a 103-85 win over Florida. Jamarion Sharp set the program record with nine blocks. Ole Miss also shattered the program record with 16 blocks as a team, breaking the previous mark by three and tying the SEC record for team blocks in a conference game.
Sharp ranks fourth nationally and leads the SEC with 45 blocks on the season and 3.00 blocks per game. He ranks No. 70 in NCAA history with 324 blocks, now with his sights set on Ole Miss legend Reginald Buckner, who ranks 69th with 326. Sharp is also the NCAA's career active leader in blocks, outpacing his closest competitor by 27. The Hopkinsville, Kentucky, native is currently 14th in NCAA history averaging 4.1 blocks per game.
With the big night, the Rebels eclipsed the century mark in blocks on the season, sitting at 101 through 15 games. Ole Miss is on pace for 209 blocks, which would shatter single-season program record of 185, set in 2012-13.
McPhee-McCuin's squad ranks second in the SEC in blocks behind only South Carolina. Rita Igbokwe has led the way, erasing 34 shots so far this season, good for No. 19 nationally and fourth in the SEC. Seven Rebels have six or more blocks, including Igbokwe (34), Tiya Singleton (13), Marquesha Davis (11) and Madison Scott (10) in double figures.
In a 55-45 SEC-opening win over Alabama last week, the Rebels blocked 12 shots, a program record on the road. The Rebels set the single-game record regardless of venue with 14 against Mississippi Valley State. Igbokwe also had a record-setting performance earlier this season, blocking eight shots at UAPB in December.
McPhee-McCuin's squad will look to add to its growing block total tonight against Auburn. Tickets are available at OleMissTix.com for just $10. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT from the SJB Pavilion.
Beard and Co. will look to do the same this weekend against Vanderbilt at the SJB Pavilion. Saturday's tipoff is set for noon. Secure your seats at OleMissTix.com.
