1/11/2024 | Men's Basketball
OXFORD, Miss. – Numerous records were broken as the No. 23 Ole Miss men's basketball team put up a dominant performance in their SEC home opener, defeating Florida 103-85 on Wednesday night in the SJB Pavilion.
Setting a facility record with 103 points, their first 100-point game in SEC play since March 2001, the Rebels (14-1, 1-1 SEC) were just as potent on the defensive end. Led by Jamarion Sharp, setting a school record for blocks in a game with nine, the Ole Miss defense registered 16 swats. Their team total set a program record for most by the Rebels in a game, tied the SEC record for most in a conference game, and ranks fifth in SEC history all-time.
A tight game in the first few minutes, the Ole Miss lead at 12-10 was quickly erased by a 7-0 run from the Gators (10-5, 0-2 SEC). Trailing 18-14 with about 12 minutes before the midway break, Jaylen Murray helped fuel a 15-2 streak for the home team, scoring or assisting on 10 of those points. While the Rebels led by as much as nine, Florida trimmed their deficit at the half as Ole Miss led 44-40.
Early in the second half, the Rebels pushed their advantage to double digits on a three from Jaemyn Brakefield and never looked back. Shooting 75.0% from the floor in the final 20 minutes of action, Ole Miss' offense scored 59 points, the most in a half this season.
The Rebels largest lead came with just over two minutes left to play, as they went up by 23, eventually finishing with a 103-85 win. The victory ties the SJB Pavilion for home win streak now at nine games.
Setting a career high with 28 points tonight, Brakefield is now averaging 20.8 points per game over the last six contests and is shooting a blistering 67.2 percent from the field. Murrell shot a perfect 3-3 from deep in the second half to help propel him to a 23-point game, giving him 1,178 career points and rising from 33rd to 31st in the school record books.
Sharp's nine-block game propelled him from 81st in NCAA history to 70th with 324. The next player to pass on the collegiate career blocks list is former Rebel Reginald Buckner who had 326.
Allen Flanigan added 17 points and a trio of blocks, while Jaylen Murray scored 12 to go with eight assists.
Florida was led by Walter Clayton Jr. with 23 points and Zyon Pullin with 18. Alex Condon posted a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The 14-1 Rebels remain home for their next conference game, as they are set to take on Vanderbilt in the SJB Pavilion on Saturday, January 13 at noon on the SEC Network.
