No. 23 Men’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker Against No. 12 Purdue

11/29/2024 | Men's Basketball

SAN DIEGO – In a battle for the 2024 Rady Children's Invitational Championship, a last second putback was the difference as No. 23 Ole Miss dropped its first game of the season 80-78, Friday Nov. 29 against No. 12 Purdue at LionTree Arena.

Ole Miss (6-1) stormed back in the second half after being down eight at the break. Jaemyn Brakefield led the charge for the Rebels with 16 second-half points on 6-of-7 shooting. Matthew Murrell added 11 in the second half, knocking down three triples.

Ole Miss's defense came to life holding the Boilermakers (7-1) scoreless for nearly four and a half minutes midway through the second half, taking a 62-59 lead with 9:50 to play.

The Rebels stretched the lead to seven twice via eight straight points from Brakefield. Purdue battled back in the closing minutes taking a 76-75 lead with 3:03 to play off an Ole Miss turnover.

The two sides traded buckets down to the final play when Braden Smith found a pocket in the corner and sent a fade away jumper up to hopefully win it for the Boilermakers. He missed everything but Myles Corvin was there to grab the offensive rebound and putback with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock.

Sean Pedulla had a long look from around half court but came up empty as the Rebels dropped their first game of the season.

Brakefield led Ole Miss with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Dre Davis led the Rebels on the glass with six boards for the second straight game.

Jaylen Murray led Ole Miss with nine assists giving him five straight games with five or more helpers.

Ole Miss returns to action Tuesday Dec. 3 when the Rebels head to Louisville (5-2) for the annual SEC/ACC Challenge. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT on ACC Network.
