Women’s Tennis Soars in Day One of Sectionals

ATHENS, Ga. – Ole Miss women's tennis had a hot start to the ITA Sectionals in Athens on Friday, winning eight-of-nine singles matches and 1-0 in doubles play.
Senior Ludmila Kareisová won all three matches she participated in on the day. In a thriller, Kareisová knocked off No. 35 Sophia Biolay in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Against an SEC rivalr, the senior defeated Tennessee's Vanesa Suarez to advance to quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-4.
Kariesová's doubles partner, Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher, also dominated day one, advancing to the elite eight in both doubles and singles. In doubles, the star-powered duo defeated Tulane 6-4, 7-6 (3).
In singles, Leclercq-Ficher powered through her first match up in straight sets, to face No. 106 Sofia Rojas of Georgia in the Sweet 16. Closer to rounding out the day, the French native defeated Rojas, 6-3, 7-5.
To continue with the Rebel hot streak, Lucie Petruzelova earned two more victories, inching closer to 75 career wins. In the round of 16, Petruzelova forced a tiebreak into a third set victory. The Charolette transfer also tallied a victory in straight sets to advance in the elite eight.
Another Rebel punched her ticket to the singles quarterfinal round, after a ranked victory in the round of 16. Emma Kette made a quick comeback against No. 122 Talia Neilson-Gatenby, taking the match 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Momentum was high for the junior, and she ended day one in Athens with a win against Auburn.
Singles quarterfinals and the doubles round of 16 will begin Friday morning.
