Men’s Basketball Downed in Battle With No. 13 Alabama
2/28/2024 | Men's Basketball
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men's basketball team put on a strong offensive performance, shooting over 50 percent from the field in a game for the seventh time this season, however, it wasn't enough to top No. 13 Alabama on Wednesday night in the SJB Pavilion as they fell 103-88.
On the first possession of the game, Jaemyn Brakefield found Moussa Cisse down low for a quick dunk. One of two made threes in the game from Matthew Murrell helped Ole Miss (19-9, 6-9 SEC) take a 7-2 lead early, before the Rebels extended to a double-digit lead on a make from deep by TJ Caldwell to go up 25-13 with just under 12 minutes before halftime.
A transition dunk by Allen Flanigan with about five minutes on the clock gave Ole Miss their largest lead of the game at 14, before Alabama (20-8, 12-3 SEC) began to chip away, trimming the home team advantage to three by halftime as the Rebels led 42-39.
The two teams traded blows to begin the back half of action, before a run from the Crimson Tide put them up 60-51 with 14:19 left to play. The Rebels responded, however, as a handful of free throws from Brakefield, Flanigan, and Brandon Murray were accompanied by a Brakefield dunk to tie the game at 65.
The remaining nine and a half minutes of play went the way of Alabama, as Ole Miss' 88 points fell short.
The Rebels were led by Flanigan with 28 points, the second-most in a single game in the guard's collegiate career. For the third time this year Flanigan took advantage of his chances at the charity stripe by hitting double-digit free throws with 12. He entered the game seventh in the SEC and in the top-100 nationally for makes from the free throw line.
Brakefield added 21 points for his fifth 20-point performance of the season.
Jaylen Murray dished out seven assists to orchestrate the offense, the fifth game where he's hit that mark or better at the point.
The Crimson Tide were paced offensively by the conference's leading scorer Mark Sears with 26. Aaron Estrada posted a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Next for Ole Miss is a road game at Missouri on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.
