Men’s Basketball Comeback Attempt Falls Short at SEC Tournament
3/14/2024 | Men's Basketball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A late 10-0 run made it a three-point game with just over two minutes to play, but the Ole Miss men's basketball team was unable to get past Texas A&M in the second round of the 2024 SEC Tournament on Thursday evening in Bridgestone Arena, falling 80-71.
It was a close first half of action, with a three from Allen Flanigan putting the Rebels (20-12, 7-11 SEC) on the board early. There were six even scores over the first 20 minutes of action, with a layup through contact and ensuing free throw form Flanigan setting the score at 13-all. A three from Matthew Murrell would later draw the board at 31-31, before the Aggies (19-13, 9-9 SEC) added four to take a lead into the midway break.
While Texas A&M remained in front, Ole Miss held tight. A free throw from Murrell put the Rebels within striking distance, down one, with under 16 minutes to play. A run from the seventh-seeded Aggies put the tenth-seeded Rebels down 13, 61-48, with 4:52 on the clock.
A pair of makes from the charity stripe by Jaemyn Brakefield began a 10-0 run, as a corner three by Murrell cut the deficit to three, 61-58. The clock would expire on Ole Miss' run at the SEC Tournament, however.
Registering his sixth 20-point game of the season, Brakefield led Ole Miss with 23, adding seven rebounds, five assists, a block, and a steal. Flanigan added 17 points with six boards, two assists, and a steal.
With four blocked shots, Jamarion Sharp helped push the team season total to 184 swats, tied for the second-most in a single season.
