Men’s Tennis Downed by No. 7 Tennessee

4/7/2024 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 59 Ole Miss men's tennis team couldn't secure a victory against the 7th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday, as the Rebels dropped their senior day match at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, 5-2.

The Rebels (9-13, 2-9 SEC) worked to outlast the Volunteers (21-4, 10-1 SEC), but Tennessee ultimately took the match, 5-2, bringing their winning streak to five in a row.

In doubles, the Rebels fought fiercely, but ultimately fell short against the Volunteers starting with court three going to Tennessee. The No. 65 ranked duo, Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt, battled it out with the 5th-ranked tandem of Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz, but ultimately dropped the match, 7-5, to give the Volunteers the doubles point.

As for singles, Tennessee captured the first win on court three, 6-1, 6-4 before taking victories on courts two, six, and one. The Volunteers had already secured the match, but both teams decided to play out which ended up being a positive decision in the Rebels' favor.

Noah Schlagenhauf showed to be a gritty performer for the Rebels after securing his first set, 7-5. Although the sophomore dropped his second, he persisted through in the third to grab a tiebreaker victory and win the match, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (2).

On Engelhardt's senior day and last conference match at home, he provided a show for all those in attendance. Before dropping his second set in the tiebreaker, the Augsburg, Germany, native was able to pick up his first, 6-4. As the final court left playing, Engelhardt showed his upperclassman poise by coming from behind in the third set to take it, 7-6 (7), and to secure his 59th collegiate singles win.
