Men’s Golf Falls in Heartbreaker by One Stroke at the NCAA Stanford Regional

5/15/2024 | Men's Golf

STANFORD, Calif. – Battling down to the last hole, the Ole Miss men's golf team saw its 2023-24 season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion in the final round of the Stanford Regional where the Rebels fell by one stroke from the cut line to advance to the NCAA Championship.

Ole Miss struggled during its last day at the Stanford Golf Course with a 284 (+4) round score and was unable to come back from last-minute success by the host school Stanford and move on in the postseason. Overall, the Rebels ended their time in California in sixth place with an 831 (-9) score.

"Today was not our best," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We've struggled at times this season getting off to poor starts. We've tried to address it and talk about it, and again, it kind of jumped up and bit us today. We got off to a really rough start. I'm proud of the way the guys hung in there. They fought. They gave themselves a chance down the stretch. Ultimately, the teams that were around us made a few more birdies in the clutch and we were not able to do that. With a young group, it's a learning experience. Hopefully, we get better with this, come back next year, and are better for this experience. It stings right now, for sure."

The day can only be described as a back-and-forth battle between Ole Miss, UCLA, Stanford, and SMU for the fifth spot. The Rebels shot four-over in their first nine but rallied in their last nine holes at even to close out the gap. However, two Stanford golfers birdied their last hole of the day, edging out Ole Miss from the cut by one stroke.

Cameron Tankersley had the best round of the day for the Rebels at 67 (-3). The sophomore went bogey-free for his first nine holes and made five birdies, including one on his final hole of the day. He finished his time in Palo Alto tied for eighth at 6-under overall, marking his fifth top-10 finish of the season and eighth in his career.

Tom Fischer finished out his first postseason campaign with his second top-10 finish of his career tied for 10th place at 5-under overall.

Kye Meeks earned his best finish out of his three postseason appearances tied for 18th overall at 2-under. This marks Meeks' third top-20 finish of the season and sixth of his career.

Tim Tillmanns ended his final year of eligibility with Ole Miss at tied for 47th at 4-over. Michael La Sasso rounded out the scoring for the Rebels in 62nd at 10-over overall.
