Soccer Falls to No. 10 Memphis Sunday Night

8/25/2024 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss suffered their first loss of the season, dropping its Sunday night game to No. 10 Memphis by a score of 2-1. The Tigers were lifted by a pair of goals from freshman Ai Kitagawa.

An extremely physical battle ensued the entire 90 minutes between both sides. Neither team was able to scratch across a goal in the first half. The Tigers held a (9-2) advantage on shots and a (4-1) edge on corners in the first 45. Senior goalkeeper Shu Ohba made her season debut for the Rebels and made four saves on the night.

Memphis found the scoring column early in the second half with Kitagawa found the back of the net in the 51st minute. She found the scoring column again in the 59th of an assist from Ashley Henderson.

Ole Miss remained in the fight generating several offensive chances in the attacking zone down the stretch. They caught a break in the 87th minute when Memphis' Finely Lavin was called for a handball inside the box. That would set up a Kelly Brady penalty attempt which she converted for her first goal of the season. Ole Miss held a two-shot advantage in the second half but were unable to generate the tying goal in the final minutes.

Coach Rouse's thoughts on the game:

"We knew with this team coming in that it was going to be a challenging game in multiple ways and all the things that we anticipated they would challenge us in they did. It's an opportunity for us to look at what are the areas we can improve on and how we can be more proficient in our execution. We have another tough opponent that we have to go play on Thursday so this can be a great opportunity for us to learn."

On the continued fight in the team after going down late in the half:
"It speaks volumes of the character of our players that we have in the program. The never say die attitude, and the willingness to continue to grind and fight regardless of what the score is. That's who we are and that's something that's going to catapult us in future games if we can just get a little bit cleaner in our execution."
