Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State – A Look Back on the Court
1/16/2025 | Men's Basketball
A series that began back in 1914, the 270 games played between Ole Miss and Mississippi State ranks as the 12th-most between two programs in the history of college basketball. On Saturday, January 18, the two teams will meet on the hardwood for the latest battle in the in-state rivalry, and the first time each team holds a ranking in the AP top 25. With another classic surely on the way, we look back at the men's basketball iteration of the Egg Bowl and its long history.
The two schools met for the first time in men's basketball in the 1913-14 academic year, playing four games in four straight days in February. While Mississippi State would take the first nine games played, it was in 1917 that Ole Miss grabbed their first win 29-15 in Oxford.
The Rebels and Bulldogs would play each other four times nearly every season throughout their time in the Southern Conference, and into the early years of the Southeastern Conference when both programs joined in 1932. It was during that transition of conferences that Ole Miss began to hit their stride, winning nine of 10 games between the 1928-29 and 1931-32 seasons.
Despite both programs being founding members of the SEC and facing off consistently throughout history during the regular season, the Rebels and Bulldogs have only met twice in the history of the conference tournament. It wasn't until a second-round matchup in 2003 that the two ran into each other, with Mississippi State winning 73-64 in the second round. Ole Miss would win the second matchup in 2014, 78-66.
Most recently, the two schools faced each other twice during the 2023-24 season, with each home team defending their court. Notably, Ole Miss picked up an 86-82 victory in the SJB Pavilion last January in front of a record crowd of 10,630, the fifth-largest crowd ever to watch a college basketball game in the state of Mississippi.
The No. 21 Rebels and No. 15 Bulldogs will tip off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 18 in Humphrey Coliseum and on ESPN2.
