Men’s Basketball Falls In Quarterfinals of SEC Tournament Against Auburn

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 8 seed Ole Miss men's basketball team (22-11, 10-8 SEC) dropped a hard-fought game against the No. 1 seed Auburn Tigers (28-4, 16-3 SEC) 62-57 Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament at Bridgestone Arena.

It was a defensive battle the first 20 minutes of action as both sides got off to sluggish shooting starts. Ole Miss held Auburn to just nine points over the first 8:01 of play on 30.0 percent shooting.
 
The Rebels held the Tigers to just 35.7 percent shooting (10-for-28) for the half and under 30 points for just the fourth time in the first half all season. The lead changed hands five times as Auburn took a 29-22, lead into the break.

The Tigers would go up nine to start the second half, but Ole Miss continued to stay in the fight and chip away. The Rebels held Auburn scoreless for 4:34 of action, utilizing a 7-0 run to tie it at 46 with 6:56 to play.
 
A Chaney Johnson three-pointer followed by a Johni Broome bucket put Auburn back in front by five as play reached the under four media timeout. The Tigers would push the lead to 57-47 with 3:00 minutes remaining before Ole Miss cut the lead to six.
 
A pair of free throws from Davon Barnes and a Malik Dia dunk put the Rebels within two possessions with 2:34 to play.

Auburn would extend the lead back to nine with 1:34 remaining. After two free throws from Dia, Sean Pedulla would come away with a steal and layup to cut the Auburn lead to five. Ole Miss would get a stop with just under a minute to play and a pair of free throws from Jaylen Murray made it 60-57, Auburn, with 38 seconds left.
 
Johni Broome would get the big bucket the Tigers needed with 11.1 seconds left putting Auburn up 62-57.

Broome led the Tigers with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Pedulla and Dre Davis each scored 12 points for the Rebels.
 
Ole Miss will return to Oxford and await their fate for the NCAA Tournament.
 
NOTABLES
  • The Ole Miss defense held Auburn to just 29 first half points marking just the fourth time this season the Tigers have scored less than 30 in a first half. Auburn entered today's contest 5th in the NCAA in scoring offense averaging 40.1 points in the first half this season.
  • Ole Miss came away with 10 steals surpassing 285 for the season. The 290 steals on the season is now the third most in school history for a single season.
  • The Rebels made four three-pointers on the afternoon reaching 272 made 3s on the year, good for the fourth most in school history for a single season.
