Soccer Falls to Mississippi State in SEC Opener

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss soccer falls to Mississippi State, 4-1, in its Southeastern Conference opener Friday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Mississippi State's (7-1-0, 1-0-0 SEC) Laila Murillo opened the scoring for the Bulldogs in the 19th minute, finishing an assist from Chiara Tappe to give Mississippi State an early 1-0 advantage.
Ole Miss (7-2-0, 0-1-0 SEC) produced four shots on goal during the opening half, including two attempts from Isabella Pontieri, but Mississippi State goalkeeper Jenny Harrison kept the Rebels off the scoreboard through the first 45 minutes.
The Rebels found the equalizer at the 55:30 mark when Sarah Granno converted a shot from outside the box on a pass from Cassidy Kuehne. The goal was Granno's second of the season, while Kuehne earned her first assist.
Ole Miss was reduced to 10 players in the 69th minute after earning a red card before Kati Anne Shepherd scored 18 seconds later to put Mississippi State back in front. Soon after Kara Harris added a goal in the 81st minute, and Murillo converted a penalty kick in the 85th to complete the scoring for the Bulldogs.
Mississippi State finished with a 13-11 advantage in shots and placed eight attempts on goal compared with seven for Ole Miss. The Rebels earned five corner kicks and held 54% of the possession. Taylor Prigge recorded three saves in goal.
Ole Miss returns to action Friday, Sept. 18, traveling to Auburn, Alabama, to face Auburn. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
