Jan. 17, 2003
OXFORD, Miss. - Seven student-athletes were among 99 scholars from the University of Mississippi to be featured in the fall 2002 edition of Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges.
Eli Manning, Lanier Goethie, Doug Ziegler, Wes Scott and Ross Barkley from the football team, Alex Hartman of the men's tennis team and Tiffany Weiss from the women's soccer team were recognized for their achievement at a reception honoring all the Who's Who recipients from the University of Mississippi held on the Ole Miss campus Friday.
"Once again, the student-athletes at the University of Mississippi are being honored for their overall accomplishments," said Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone. "Many of our student-athletes receive recognition beyond their athletic accomplishments. These individuals receiving Who's Who honors are being recognized nationally for their academics, extracurricular activities and services."
Manning, a native of New Orleans, La., holds 24 school records, which includes 6,519 career passing yards and 52 touchdowns. The junior Marketing major earned Most Valuable Offensive Player honors in the MainStay Independence Bowl where he passed for 313 yards while leading the Rebels to a 27-23 victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Heavily involved in the Ole Miss CHAMPS Life Skills program, Manning was a member of the 2002 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team and a CoSIDA/Verizon District VI Academic All-America honoree.
A Baxley, Ga., native, Goethie received the 2002 Chucky Mullins Courage Award and wore the late Mullins' No. 38 during the 2002 season. One of four permanent team captains, Goethie started the season's first four games of his senior year at linebacker, before suffering a broken bone in his left foot during the first half against Vanderbilt. Prior to the injury, he was credited with 22 tackles (14 solo), including two TFLs, and had one pass deflection and one forced fumble. A Marketing major, Goethie was named to the 2002 SEC Good Works Team.
Zeigler, a Wilmington, Ohio native, started the first four games of the season before suffering a broken leg during the first half of the Vanderbilt contest. He was selected as one of four permanent team captains for the 2002 season. Zeigler, a senior marketing major, was named to the second team preseason All-America team by The Sporting News and was selected first team All-SEC by Athlon, The Birmingham News, The Southeastern Post and The Sporting News. He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Unity Council.
As a junior, Scott appeared in all 12 games for the Rebels and started at weak safety against Arkansas, Auburn, and Georgia in place of the injured Von Hutchins. The Arkansas start was the second of the Memphis native's career, first on defense. He started one game at receiver in 1999. He was credited with 32 tackles (15 solo), two pass deflections, one interception and one QB pressure. Off the field, Scott was named to the CoSIDA/Verizon District VI Academic All-America second team. An Accounting major, Scott was the recipient of the Accountancy Alumni Chapter Academic Achievement Award.
Barkley, who hails from New Albany, Miss., appeared in 4-of-12 games, seeing action in the Memphis Vanderbilt, Arkansas State and Alabama contests. The junior is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.
An All-American and three-time All-SEC honoree, Hartman a native of Kolmarden, Sweden, heads into his final campaign ranked No. 24 in the nation in singles. The senior captain has played No. 1 singles for the Rebels his entire career and in 2002 helped Ole Miss to the SEC Western Division title and a berth in the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen." Off the court, he was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete last year and is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. A Managerial Finance major, Hartman is a member of the M-Club, German Club and Finance Club.
Weiss moved from the soccer field to the coaching bench in 2002, serving as a student assistant on the Ole Miss coaching staff. The junior from Dallas joined the staff after medical reasons ended her Rebel playing career following the 2001 season. Voted Offensive MVP in 2001, Weiss caught fire in her second season with the Rebels, leading the squad in goals (7) and overall points (18). She earned All-Tournament honors at both the UAB Nike Classic and the SEC Tournament. A special education major, Weiss is the secretary for the Student Alumni Council. She has been listed on the Chancellor's and Dean's Honor Roll and is the recipient of the National Library of Poetry Editor's Choice Award.
Selection to Who's Who is based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extra-curricular activities and potential for continued success. The 99 UM students to be featured in the new edition are among an elite group from some 1,900 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations.
