Rebel Student-Athletes Finalists For H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Of The Year Award
March 27, 2003
OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Alex Hartman of the Ole Miss men's tennis team and senior Lindsay Price of the Rebel softball team have been chosen among 24 student-athletes, one male and one female from each Southeastern Conference institution, as recipients of an SEC post-graduate scholarship and are finalists for the 2002-03 H. Boyd McWhorter SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, Commissioner Mike Slive announced Thursday.
Each finalist will receive a $5,000 scholarship for post-graduate studies. The SEC Faculty Athletics Representatives Boyd McWhorter Selection Committee will choose the outstanding male and female student-athletes and each will receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship, provided by the ALLTEL Corporation.
"Lindsay and Alex are the epitome of student-athletes," Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator Lynnette Johnson said. "They have excelled in the classroom and on the field of competition. Both have been wonderful leaders for their respective teams. We are proud to have them represent the University of Mississippi."
An All-American and three-time All-SEC honoree, Hartman a native of Kolmarden, Sweden, is one of the top collegiate players in the nation. The senior captain has played No. 1 singles for the Rebels his entire career and in 2002 helped Ole Miss to the SEC Western Division title and a berth in the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen."
This year Hartman, currently ranked No. 15 in singles and No. 11 in doubles, has led the Rebels to a 12-3 overall record and first place standing in the SEC West at 4-2. He needs one win to record his 100th career victory at Ole Miss.
Off the court, Hartman was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete last year and is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. A Managerial Finance major, Hartman is a member of the M-Club, German Club and Finance Club. Hartman was featured in the fall 2002 edition of the Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities.
"We are very proud that Alex has been chosen to represent the University of Mississippi for this prestigious award," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "Over the last four years the success of our team is a result of Alex's leadership on the court. He carries this hard work and determination into the classroom. Alex exemplifies the term student-athlete."
A senior for the Rebel softball team, Price has been a team leader and one of the top pitchers for Ole Miss over the past four seasons. The Terry, Miss., native ranks second in the Rebel career record book in saves, strikeouts, complete games and innings-pitched. She is third in wins with 21.
This season has been Price's finest in the Red and Blue. The righthander has already recorded a new season-high for wins with eight, including the first two seven-inning shutouts of her career. In addition, she is fourth in the SEC in strikeouts.
The University's 2003 co-recipient of the Eugenia Conner Memorial Award, Price has also been outstanding in the classroom, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in Pharmacy. She was named Academic All-District and Academic All-SEC each of the last two years.
"We are extremely proud of Lindsay, and I can't imagine a more deserving candidate," Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts said. "She represents everything you want to see in a student-athlete. She has been a leader for this program on the field and in the classroom, and we are fortunate to have a person of her quality on our team."
The SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards were first presented in 1986. The award was renamed the H. Boyd McWhorter SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in May 1990 to honor the former commissioner who served the conference from 1972-86.
The award will be presented to the two winners in May at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Fla.
