Ole Miss Chancellor Announces Search Committee to Find Athletic Director

March 17, 1998

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- The names of eight individuals serving on a search committee to find a successor to University of Mississippi Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Pete Boone were announced today by Ole Miss Chancellor Robert C. Khayat.

Dr. Robert Weems, a law professor who chairs the University's Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, will chair the search committee.

Others serving on the committee are Dr. Judy Cole, assistant dean of the Graduate School; Dr. Andy Mullins, special assistant to the Chancellor; Dr. Max Williams, acting chair and professor of sociology; alumnus Gary Anderson of Jackson; alumnus Robert Bailey of Meridian; alumnus Raymond Brown of Pascagoula; and Ole Miss senior Calvin Thigpen of Jackson, president of the Associated Student Body government.

Although the University announced Boone's resignation last week, it isn't effective until April 15. "If we do not have a candidate selected by that date, I will name an interim director of intercollegiate athletics to serve until the new director is named," said Chancellor Khayat.

Written applications and nominations should be directed to the Office of the Chancellor, The University of Mississippi, University, MS 38677. Applications and nominations will be accepted until the position is filled, but the search committee will begin reviewing applications no later than April 17.

The committee looking for Boone's replacement has been instructed to conduct a national search "to generate the finest array of candidates possible," Khayat said. After the committee has screened and interviewed individuals nominated or applying for the post, the group will forward to the Chancellor the names of all acceptable candidates.

Candidates should have a bachelor's degree and significant senior administrative experience at an NCAA institution, Weems said. "They also must have exceptional interpersonal and communications skills and fully commit to the institutional goals of The University of Mississippi."

The athletic director at Ole Miss is responsible for the administration, accountability and guidance of all aspects of its athletics program. Duties include departmental and personnel administration, supervision of the head coaches in women's and men's sports, event scheduling, budgeting, public relations and marketing, development of private support, and compliance with all University, conference and NCAA policies and regulations.

"The position we are seeking to fill is of utmost importance to the University," Khayat said. "We appreciate the search committee members' willingness to undertake this assignment and thank them for rendering this service to the University."
