OXFORD, Miss. -- Six finalists for the position of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at The University of Mississippi have been invited for campus interviews.

In its third meeting, held Thursday night in Jackson, Miss., the search committee charged with identifying a new Ole Miss athletic director considered the 10 top candidates, and had the "very difficult task" of reducing the list to six finalists, said Dr. Robert Weems, a law professor who chairs both the University's Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics and the search committee.

The finalists, who will visit the Oxford campus over the next two weeks, are:

  • Richard George, associate athletic director, Vanderbilt University
  • Richard Giannini, athletic director, Northeast Louisiana University
  • Dan Radakovich, associate athletic director, University of South Carolina
  • John Shafer, senior associate athletic director, University of Georgia
  • Mark Webb, athletic director, University of The South
  • James "Butch" Worley, associate athletic director, University of Texas.

During the campus interviews, the finalists will meet with Chancellor Robert C. Khayat, coaches, athletic department administrators, the search committee, the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, and alumni representatives.

"The committee is extremely impressed with the finalists and with many of those who did not make it to the finalist stage," Dr. Weems said.

Ole Miss Athletic Director Pete Boone left the University April 15 to return to the banking industry in Baton Rouge, La.
