Farrar, Hoffman Named Finalists For H. Boyd McWhorter SEC Student-Athlete of the Year Award
May 15, 2002
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss senior baseball player Clint Farrar and senior women's golfer Elizabeth Hoffman were named finalists for the H. Boyd McWhorter Southeastern Conference Student-Athlete of the Year Award, by the SEC Office. Each will receive a $5,000 scholarship for post-graduate studies.
Farrar, an infielder from Clinton, Miss., holds a 3.22 cumulative GPA while majoring in Managerial Finance. He has appeared in 44-of-53 games for the 16th-ranked Rebels this season, starting 34. He is currently batting .271 with one home run and 19 runs batted in. He has twice been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and was also named to the UMAA Honor Roll in the spring of 2000 and 2001, and during the fall of 2001.
"This is a tremendous honor for Clint," said Ole Miss Head Baseball Coach Mike Bianco. "He's the type of player you like to have on your team. He's filled whatever role we've needed him for on the field, and he's been a dedicated student in his studies. Clint has been a joy to coach during my two years here, and he's very deserving of this honor."
Hoffman, from Kingwood, Texas, has twice been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, including during the spring of 2002. Majoring in English, Hoffman boasts a 3.92 GPA and was recently named to Phi Beta Kappa, becoming the first Ole Miss athlete to receive that distinction. In addition, she has also earned NGCA Academic All-America status, as well as being inducted into Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key National Honor Society.
Hoffman led the Lady Rebels this year with a 77.44 stroke average and five top-20 finishes, including an 18th-place performance at the SEC Championships.
"Elizabeth has meant so much to this program with her contributions in the classroom, as well as on the golf course," said Ole Miss Head Women's Golf Coach Meghan Bolger. "She sets a standard in the classroom to which everyone should strive to achieve, and she works equally hard on the playing field. I can think of no one who has earned the honor of being considered for this award more than Elizabeth."
Twenty-four student-athletes, one male and one female from each SEC institution, were chosen by their respective schools to be finalists for the award. The SEC Faculty Athletics Representatives Boyd McWhorter Selection Committee will choose the outstanding male and female student-athletes, and each will receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship, provided by the ALL TEL Corporation. The award will be presented to the two winners in June at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Fla.
