May 15, 2002
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss student-athletes Phyllis Manley, from the softball team, and Charlie Waite, from baseball, were named to the 2002 Southeastern Conference Good Works at-large team Wednesday, as announced by the league office.
Manley, a junior on the Rebel softball team, has coordinated numerous community service activities, including a game night/bonfire for a local children's home and Christmas caroling at the Baptist Hospital and a retirement home. The Southaven, Miss., native also participated in a campaign to raise gifts for underprivileged families in Haiti as well as a t-shirt sales drive to benefit the victims of September 11th.
Manley is a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a Vice-Chairman on the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A catcher for the Rebels, she is the SEC's active career leader in runners picked off.
"Phyllis is extremely deserving of this honor," said Ole Miss head softball coach Candi Letts. "She is a very unselfish person that is always willing to give back in any way she can. Phyllis is not only a leader for us on the diamond, but a leader for all Ole Miss student-athletes in the community."
Waite, a junior catcher for the Rebel baseball squad, is an active participant in the UM CHAMPS Life Skills program. He has read books to elementary school children and joined in game nights at a retirement home. Waite has also taken time to visit veterans' hospitals and give Halloween safety tips at elementary schools.
Hailing from Costa Mesa, Calif., Waite has started 45 games behind the plate this season for the 16th-ranked Rebels, batting .265 with 19 RBI.
"This is a tremendous honor for Charlie," said Ole Miss head baseball coach Mike Bianco. "Charlie is an outstanding citizen that has contributed a lot to our program both on and off the field. We're extremely proud to see him recognized by the Southeastern Conference for his efforts in the community."
The at-large Good Works Team represents 17 SEC sponsored sports as well as men's soccer and lacrosse. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. The honorary team is in its fourth year of existence.
