May 26, 2004
OXFORD, Miss. - SEC-TV, Fox Sports Net's live, weekly Southeastern Conference studio program, continues on Thursday, May 27 at 5:30 p.m. (Central). Dave Neal hosts this week's live, half-hour show from FSN's Atlanta studio, where he is joined by reporter Jenn Hildreth.
Thursday's show updates the 2004 SEC Baseball Tournament contested at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Birmingham, Ala. The tournament gets underway on Wednesday (5/26), with Arkansas earning the No. 1 seed. SEC-TV provides highlights from Thursday's (5/27) action.
SEC-TV's baseball analyst Larry Conley goes one-on-one with Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco, whose Rebels (39-17, 18-12 SEC) are ranked 13th in this week's Baseball America poll. Bianco discusses his team's preparations for the SEC tournament, and challenges of competing in arguably the toughest conference in college baseball, with the SEC fielding six teams in the top 25.
Also on SEC-TV, the show catches up with Ole Miss football coach David Cutcliffe as he prepares for life after Eli Manning - the NFL's No. 1 overall draft pick. Cutcliffe shares his thoughts on how spring practice has gone and how he intends to replace a quarterback (Manning) who holds 47 school records. The Rebels finished the 2003 season with a 10-3 mark and a final AP ranking of 13th.
Hildreth profiles legendary SEC coach Van Chancellor, who was named as head coach of the U.S. Olympic women's basketball team. As head coach/general manager of the WNBA's Houston Comets, Chancellor guided his squad to the league's first four titles and owns a 160-59 (.730) mark with the club. Before joining the Comets, Chancellor spent 19 successful seasons as head coach of the Ole Miss Lady Rebels, where he posted a winning percentage of .740 (439-154) and made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances. Chancellor's outstanding coaching career in college and the WNBA earned him an induction into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.
Thursday's "Home Field Presented by BC Powder" is Ole Miss' Hollingsworth Field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Since the football's facility's 1915 construction, the Rebels own a 219-59-8 record (.766). Named initially for the late Judge William Hemingway (an Ole Miss professor and chairman of the school's Committee on Athletics), legendary former Rebels coach John Vaught's name was added in '82. Ole Miss' turf became known as Hollingsworth Field in '98, when Dr. Jerry Hollingsworth was honored for his generous support of the Rebels' athletic department.
Other SEC-TV highlights include - (1) "Speed Read," which tackles the up-to-the-minute happenings around the 12-member SEC family; (2) the "BC Powder Quick Question of the Week," which queries conference baseball players - "What is your nickname?"; (3) and the Advance Auto Parts Baseball] Players of the Year - LSU outfielder Jon Zeringue and Ole Miss utility player Stephen Head. Zeringue is batting .417 with 18 doubles, 11 home runs and 50 RBI, while Head is hitting .360 with 12 doubles, 11 home runs and 47 RBI, and on the mound he owns a 6-1 record with a 2.43 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 59.1 innings pitched.
