Rebel Netters Earn ITA Academic Honors

July 31, 2002

OXFORD, Miss. - Once again, members of the Ole Miss men's and women's tennis teams were recognized for their efforts off the court as the 2002 ITA Academic Awards were announced Wednesday.

The Lady Rebels were one of 70 Division I teams to earn the prestigious ITA All-Academic Team Award. This marks the sixth year in a row that the Lady Rebels have received this honor, open to teams that have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). While achieving unprecedented success in the classroom, the team made its seventh NCAA Championship appearance in a row.

"To have been to the NCAA Championships seven consecutive years and be named an ITA All-Academic Team six of those years, is a tribute to the program," senior women's administrator Lynnette Johnson said. "We are in the business of educating students, and I am proud to say that we have excelled at the highest level. These fine young ladies have put the emphasis on student in the word student-athlete. I am as proud or more proud of this type of award as any award we have won on the court."

Individually, Camilla Gould and Mira Radu were named ITA Scholar Athletes for the women's team, while Alex Hartman earned the honor for the Rebels. In order to earn this status, a player must be a junior or senior in school, be a varsity letterwinner, and have a grade point average of at least 3.50.

Hartman, a rising senior, became the eighth Rebel to be named an ITA Scholar Athlete. An All-American, Hartman boasts a 3.63 cumulative GPA in International Business. This past year he helped lead the Rebels to the SEC Western Division Championship and a berth in the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen", while earning All-SEC honors for the third year in a row. A two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Hartman made the Chancellor's Honor Roll in the fall and the Dean's Honor Roll in the spring.

Alex Hartman became the eighth Rebel to be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete.

"This is a tremendous honor for Alex, our tennis team and our University," Rebel head coach Billy Chadwick said. "Alex is one of those special individuals that always does his best, and we are proud for him to be recognized as one of the best in the nation in the classroom as well as on the court."

This is the second year for Gould, who graduated this past May, to earn this distinction, and the first for Radu, who will enter her senior campaign this fall. Gould graduated from the University of Mississippi with a 3.67 in Accounting. She was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and made one of the University's three honor rolls every semester of her career.

Radu, is one of only two players at the Division I level to earn All-American honors and be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete. She owns a cumulative GPA of 3.61 in International Business and made the Chancellor's Honor Roll both semesters this past year. Radu also earned All-SEC honors and was named to the Verizon CoSIDA District VI Academic All-America second team.

"Camilla and Mira have done an excellent job of representing the University of Mississippi both on and off the court. They are what being a student-athlete is all about. For Mira to be one of only two Division I players to earn All-American honors and be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete is a tribute to her hard work and dedication this past year."
